Hi All

Doing a lot of maintenance to my 2002 Buell X1 whilst we’re in COVID lockdown.

My front isolator needs replacing.

I cant’ go in and ask for a part to fit a Buell in any shop here. You just need to know what part you need and never mention the word Buell.

Having read numerous threads (some of which are many years old) the front HD isolator that will work in my X1 is the following discontinued part number:

16207-79B, this being a direct fit

The other option being

16207-79D but you need to drill out the centre to fit the larger bolt.


Locally I can find an isolator described as Bailey engine front rubber mount that fits FXR & FLT 80-06 Oem 16207-79b in stock in Australia.

I can also find (in Australia) a 'super heavy duty' alternative to the stock HD 16207-79B (for FXR & FLT 80-86) for about four times the price This one is sourced from MID-USA. https://www.mid-usa.com/26059-super-duty-front-eng ine-mount-for-flt--fxr

- Exceeds OEM specifications in every aspect and is recommended for high horsepower applications
- For improved rubber to sleeve contact a steel washer is attached to the top of the sleeve preventing "tear out”
- Fits FLT models 1980/2006 & all FXR models 1982/Later
- Replaces HD# 16207-79B.

I'm a bit concerned the Mid-USA one could be too firm.

Can someone please confirm if the HD 16207-79B isolator will fit my X1.

Any views on which one to buy would be good.

Just an FYI if you end of with the 16207-79D with the smaller bolt. Instead of having to drill out the isolator for the larger bolt, you can just buy a hiem reducer to fill the gap where the bolt fits inside the isolator. That's what I did on mine and it works perfectly fine. I was a little hesitant to take a drill to an engine mount. I *think* you would need to reduce it from 1/2" to 7/16", but that's not a guarantee so double check the size of your bolts before you'd order one.

I tried to post a link to an ebay listing but it keeps giving me a formatting error. Just type "1/2 7/16 reducer" into ebay and you'll see the part that fits.

If you have access to Drag Specialties, at any of the local shops there, there is a DS part that fits its a bit firmer but works well.
I recommend that you look into Twin motorcycles ( Europe ) and see about a billet mount, and upgraded head mount bolts for your bike other wise you will be addressing breakage of bolt / bracket at some point.

I bought one for my bike from them, the billet mount from Hammer, and the bolts/washers from St. Paul. You can order the billet mount from Hammer with either of the bolt sizes.

Its a little firmer than I remember, but its hard to tell what that should be as the bikes are now 20-25 years old and many of the parts have had multiple revisions. In my case, I probably am getting extra vibration from my rear isolators as they are the regular Big Twin ones (no ears) and I think are at their "sag limit".

I just discovered that the front isolator on my 2002 S3T needs to be replaced again also. Last time i replaced it was about 10 years ago with a standard 16207-79B so yes that will work but it's the old style that is prone to failure. Mine lasted about 20K miles though.

I've been searching the past couple days to find the current part# to order. The part# supercessions are a bit confusing. Luckily i remembered that i had an isolator kit in my stockpile that i ordered from American Sport Bike before they went out of business years ago. The part# is L1501.8 and is the updated bushing kit with all the hardware and the smaller bolt to fit the new style isolator. Basically it has the 16207-79D isolator that people mention about drilling out to fit the original bolt. I personally just do not want to do that.

If you're lucky to find the L1501.8 kit with hardware that would be the way to go. I believe it has since been replaced by part# L1501.T but looks like it's on backorder. There is also a Drag Specialties isolator part# 0933-0135 that is the same as the 16207-79D that has the smaller hole. I will be replacing mine this weekend. Good luck with yours.

L1501.8 kit I have one sealed in the bag with Harley Instruction sheet. It says BARRY 32433-1 on the iso. St Paul used to have just a mount. Its gone from the website now??? I also picked up two at American Sport Bike. One went in after 14 years on the Original LOL. Should have replaced it at 13.

For sure go to Twin Motorcycles for their kit. Mine would cost a little more because its the perfect rubber for the Bike ( Official Kit ). Like the others said -79 will work but its a little firmer because it sits under a big twin if I remember correct.

I've ordered a shipment of parts from St Paul HD that includes two of the Drag Specialist front isolators referred to above.

Thanks for the advice on the billet front mount options.
