With Top end off the other area for concern is the oil pump. Because of 40k miles and hard riding Oil Consumption was rising and not what it used to be. So I checked on the history of our pumps. I know 2006 was a bad year for the oil pumps in some XBs. I cant remember specifics. 2007 there was an upgrade. More Scavenging and I also read that even though the feed was smaller the volume remained the same. OK??? Check here. http://sportsterpedia.com SPACE /doku.php/ SPACE techtalk SPACE :evo: SPACE oil03 I had to put SPACE to post the link fragments. Check both the links See these XLForum threads: on page cant post them here. What would you do? Inspect and install a new gasket or replace with the 2007 part? This X1 isn't a daily driver anymore so likely will get inspection in my case. Finally found something here. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/429452.html?1232143544 (Message edited by victory on December 07, 2020) |

Nothing. 2006 was a good year, they started fitting the bronze drive gear. 2008 onwards the whole system was changed and got rid of the worn drive gear problems for good. It's the 2005 and earlier models with the old system without the bronze drive gear that have a problem. |

"Because of 40k miles and hard riding Oil Consumption was rising and not what it used to be." Right, but if I read your post correctly, you did the top-end which is what should fix excessive oil consumption. The pump has no influence on that. The only thing you should check is your drive gear. Upgrade it for the one Simond posted if it isn't already. The '08 oil pump is a completely different design that is not compatible with pre 08 bikes, let alone tubers. |

I dont know why but somethi8ng stuck with me about the 2006 and it wasnt positive. I guess I am wrong about it. I am actually about to replace the top end. For sure there is reason to blame the top end for the high oil. I did find info at those links about the pump contributing to oil consumption and wet sumping. Looks like they made an improve with the new pump but even a 20 degree diff in cooling may not be enough to justify it. I installed the Updated Gear around the 3000 mile mark. I got this X1 with under 1000 miles. 1st owner was hurt financially and had to sell. His invoice was $12,000 2001 before a small trade in. (Message edited by victory on December 08, 2020) |

Excellent that you still have it. Have any pictures? "I installed the Updated Gear around the 3000 mile mark." You could do a visual inspection to see if the gear is still doing okay, but otherwise I think you're good on the pump front. I'd have a look at the top end and then see where things stand re oil consumption. |

https://imgur.com/OsEB04d I got rid of the oversized gel pad seat Baldwin made a couple years ago. He rides a Buell. I had it for sale for awhile but no wanted it for around $3k. So I decided to tighten it up. I had most of everything except the top end gasket set and the cyl and pistons. I have new exh studs, fuel pump overhaul parts and seals already over the years just in case. Cyl and pistons 6k miles like new. 275 Cometic kit 125 Stenzil bar 100. other misc gaskets and filters 100. Catch Can Parts around $100 Polishing supplies $100 Swingarm / Header / Sproket and maybe Tail is getting polished. This isnt a bad price to keep her around a little longer. In some years you will see it for sale again. (Message edited by victory on December 08, 2020) |

The update on the oil pump in 2007 was more of a fix to address the Pre-2008 XB engines and rubber mounted Sportsters that have oiling jets to spray oil under the piston skirts to cool the underside of the piston face. Those jets led to more oil directly fed into the flywheel compartment and increased the frequency of wet sumping. You do not have those oil jets in your X1 so it really won't do much for your oil consumption issues and is an over-kill upgrade unless you need a new pump. The difference in pumps is all internal, the thickness of the gerotors inside the pump, they decreased the feed portion and increased the return side. |

Buelligan, while the X1 doesn't have jets nor need the later pump per sé, the 07 pump is not a bad upgrade if you have prolonged high RPM riding style, like a geared down bike on the highway turning 4k+ all day. I would definitely also recommend a bronze gear in any scenario, if not already done. |

This is a 75-90 mph Highway and 60- 70mph State road tourer. Not a city slicker. (Message edited by victory on December 10, 2020) |
