I am going to attempt to replace the head gasket in my ‘97 S1 lightning. Does anybody have a step-by-step procedure to help me in this journey to the edge of my mechanical abilities?

There are service manuals available at buellmods.com.

I've removed and installed heads a bunch of times over the past 5 years, and every time that manual is sitting by my side.

There is a sequence/order to removing the rocker and head bolts to prevent warping the head, as well as torque specs and sequence for reassembly as well. Also you need to make sure the crank is in the correct position and lifters are bled down correctly. Its not difficult, but if not done correctly, you could do more damage than good.

I can't remember off the top of my head if that exact thing is covered, but Hammer Performance has some awesome videos on youtube that walk you through a lot of that kind of stuff. Worth taking a look to see if they have one that shows you what you need to know for that one.

Thank you for the responses. I have one more question on this topic. I was told to remove and replace the engine I would need a special jig to do it correctly. Is that right?

No. You can pull the heads and cylinders with the motor in place. You will need to support the bike and motor if you pull the front head. If you are just doing the rear, it should be pretty straightforward.

The rear right rocker cover bolt is sort of a pain to get at since the frame is in the way.

By "special jig" they are likely referring to a tool to compress the rear isolators to free them from the frame. You wont need to do this unless you want to separate the engine from the frame, and even then you could get around that.
