I used to own a 96 S1 in Yellow and I'm now purchasing a 97 S1 in silver with a orange frame. How many of the S1's came with the orange frames. I've searched the net but you just don't see any pictures of them. Thanks, Hodakaguy |

In 1997 all S1 frames were a silver color called Titanium. The only S1's that were built with other colored frames happened in 1998 for the S1W (S1 White Lightning). These colors were limited to Nuclear Blue, Sky White, and Classic Black. Towards the end of the tube frame production (2002 only?) Buell had an orange frame on the M2's and S3's, but the X1 had long since replaced the S1. 1313 |

What years did Buell have the "pick your colors" deal for the bikes? |

FMJ - I think that was just 99 that they made a big deal out of it but from 98-up you could order a bike with most of the combos (the big brochures had the colors listed with the frame colors available with it). |

It was the 1999 S3 that was available in 432 (if I remember right) color combinations. 1313 |

Sounds like the frame was powder coated. The orange frame was only available from the factory in 2001 and 2002 on the M2 and the S3's. That's it. I think Me and Slaughter got the two black and orange S3's! I thought it looked so good I had to have another, so that's what I did with my M2 (that there fancy pic to the left). I talked to the owner, he said it was powdercoated molten orange, the jugs and side cases were also powdercoated to match. Here's a link to a picture of the bike. It looks very well done and I like the color scheme. Hodakaguy http://webpages.charter.net/hodakaguy/ |

Not sure, but this may be some of the stuff you were referring to. I've previously posted pics of the "16 colors" posters that showed all the various iterations. Someday, and that day may never come, I've vowed to go through and write, on all 16, what % or the total production it represented.

Quick Draw, er I mean Court, You beat me to it once again. I pulled out one of my 1999 brochures this morning before I went to work in hopes of taking some pics and posting them when I got home tonight. With 432 possible combinations and the low sales volume of the S3's I wonder if 432 '99 S3's were produced in order to possibly acheive one of every combination. I still remember seeing my first '99 S3 Blue Streak with White frame and wheels parked out back by Buell R&D. I had to do a double take, because from the distance I was from it my initial thought was that it was a real cherry '95 S2. Unfortunately, that is the only time an S3 has done anything for me - well besides the time the green '99 S3-T decided to slide out from under me. 1313 |

the 432 number was a marketing gimick and bore no resemblence to mathmatical accuracy for the supposed # of combinations. |
