Just figured I'd post this on here for anyone who's never seen them. I searched the forum for opinions before buying one and couldn't find anything, although the general opinions of them online seemed to be "this thing changed my life". I changed my probably 20 year old primary gasket this winter and it was pretty well stuck to the engine case. I scraped off 75% of it easily but got tired of messing with that really thin stuff and didn't want to risk gouging up the surface with a metal razor. I couldn't find gasket remover at any of the local stores, was going to order some but for half the price I figured I'd just try the bristle disc instead. They made 3 grits, green is the roughest, yellow is the middle(and the one I usually saw people using on engine gaskets), and white which is the finest. I opted for the white just because I was paranoid about scaring the aluminum(I read that you still want to keep it moving, and don't just sit in one spot too long). It only took a few minutes and worked perfect. It cleaned off the gasket and pretty much polished the surface for a new gasket. I've gone for 2 rides so far and I haven't had a drip of oil come out so I think it's a win. Before:   After:   | ||

Roloc discs are great but they can remove aluminum as well, making gaps between parts if you're not careful. Steel, no problem. Aluminum, make sure all you're removing is the gasket. That said, I've been using them for decades on my auto builds (iron blocks). | ||

I know one of the things I read was that they can wear into the aluminum if you let it sit in one spot too long. Definitely made sure to keep it moving and not push too hard. Most of it came off pretty quick, every so often you get a small stubborn spot. It seemed like the trick on those was to hit it one pass with the bristles going horizontal, then another pass with them going vertical, alternating back and forth. I also found the roloc mandrel that fit it at harbor freight for $3, which was a plus. Welcome Mike! I had my bike in pieces on the garage floor for 3.5 months of "winter maintenance" that ran itself all the way into June. I'd been waiting to mention this one until I got to run the bike and I made sure all of my oil didn't end up in a puddle under the bike. So far no leaks and everything is running perfect. Even started 1st try, which was more than I could've asked for. | ||

Ive used the green Scotchbrite pad for rocker box gasket removal. Worked great. I cut it with scissors in four pieces for each pad. |
