So, in the classifieds someone posted a CL ad for a red/white frame S2 with bags, for sale. Not theirs, just saw the post, yadda yadda. I emailed the guy on CL and asked him the last 4 of the VIN. He said 3353. I'm confused. I thought a 1995 - which this appears to be, having a white frame and white Marchesini wheels - would have a VIN ending somewhere between 0001 and 1399? It's a dead ringer for the one I just totalled. Well, color wise and option wise - it has S2T bags and lowers, and it has some issues...but FAR fewer issues than my bike has thanks to Bambi. I dunno. I like having an S2. Do I need to replace it? Not really. Can I afford to? Nope. But will I find another? Probably not... Anyway, if anyone has insight to the VIN question that would be cool. Thanks. |

Joe, The VIN on the first 400 or so started with 1B9RT and ended with 3001-3400. Then they switched, and started with 4MZRT and ended as you would expect, 0001-1399. So, you're looking at #353 built - should have the (much desired) machined triple clamps. Like K12 said - BUY IT! |

Strange, Just looked at the ad and seems like it has the cast triple yokes....my records show the machined ones were used up until at least # 416....so maybe they were mix and matching by then. Anyway, still a killer deal |

There was also . . . . I'd need to go to Brankin to confirm . . . a little VIN snafu somewhere in that time period . . . . I was in the barn this morning and I can't believe what a pack rat I was in those days. I moved Buell manuals . . . a copy of every one ever printed to the barn. The mice can start eating the ones not still wrapped in plastic. I'd jump on that S2 were I you. |

I don't believe the VIN issue was related. The inside of my 1995 S2 parts book details what Tigerman stated: The VIN on the first 400 or so started with 1B9RT and ended with 3001-3400. With the 3 (in front of the last 3 digits) identifying the production location of Meyer Lane (which was later renamed Buell Drive). Yeah, I would expect the billet triple clamps as well but I don't really recall exactly when the switch was made. I thought I saw somewhere - like in official literature - where it listed VIN's where components changed, but can't remember where. However, looking at that bike - with a SRP rear shock, and chain drive conversion - I wouldn't be surprised if they were swapped out. But that doesn't change my recommendation - as others have stated - would be to snap it up. |

Talked to the seller, it's a 1B9RT bike, 10/94 build sticker. I think I'm going to pass. Too many projects already (72 Satellite, 89 Shelby, 98 Defender, rental apartment) and a net-zero $ from the S2 total - insurance payoff on the bike versus medical deductibles - I just can't justify it. I talked to the seller, Scott. Seems a straight shooter, nice guy, knows Buells, knows about Erik, respects the bikes, doesn't want it to go to a "meatball". Someone should honestly snap this up, and save it. I'll have plenty of parts for sale soon enough. |
