Life got in the way and my X1 has sat for a year. Tried to fire it up today and even though it had a battery tender on it, the battery is toast. Worse than that, the non ethanol gas smells like varnish and I hear nothing from the fuel pump that I replaced two years ago. F me. At a minimum I will need to drain the fuel and put in a new fuel pump. What else? Injectors? ? Anybody ever brought back to life a FI bike? |

One year?? Ethanol is bad, yes, and leaving it on a Battery tender 100% is bad too, but dang man.... FYI, battery tenders (battery killers) are fine as long as you put them on a timer so the battery gets a rest for half of each day. Before you start guessing and swapping parts blindly, how about a little diagnosis to find the problem? It's always cheaper and faster to diagnose properly. Lets start simple. Got a voltmeter? If not, Harbor Freight will give you one for free with a coupon. Step 1: Put the battery on a charger overnight. A battery tender is not a charger. Step 2: Whats the voltage read? Should be 12.6 or better. Try to crank it, what the voltage read now? Should be 9.6 or better. That will tell you if you need a battery. } |

It's a "smart" battery tinder so its supposed to cycle on/off as it's needed. Not certain it actually cycled though. Swapped out the battery for a hot one already earlier today so I know that wasn't the only problem. The engine turns over fine. The fuel pump doesn't make any sound when the key is turned so I'm assuming it at least is bad. Just not sure if I'm going to have to go in and do anything other with the FI at this point. |

Did you check the voltage on the "hot" battery? Have you checked the fuses for the fuel pump? What do the plugs look like? Saturated? Dry? One year old gas, Ethanol or not, shouldn't be thick enough to clog injectors |

Also before starting pull both plugs crank the motor over several short bursts to start cycling motor oil back i to the system as it has all settled. |

Will check the battery voltage and hook it up to ECMSpy this weekend. Service manual doesn't show a fuse for the fuel pump. Yeah, I don't think the fuel is the main problem but the fuel pump not making a sound worries me. |

Stupid question is the 'run/off' switch set to 'run'? I know it sounds basic, but sometimes those little things really trip us up. Have a tuber that rarely gets run, never had an issue where the fuel pump failed or didnt work UNLESS I forgot something dumb (like my killswitch). I dont know brother, I hope you get it sorted soon! |

I got a 2000 X1 that sat for eight years. New plugs, filter, fuel pump, cleaned all the crud out of the tank, new fuel with fuel injector cleaner, oil and filter change and I bought a race ECM. Runs great! The connections on my pump were corroded and it was covered with crud. |

I don't think it says "Fuel Pump" on it. It is powered by a relay, through the ignition fuse (IIRC). Clean the terminals on the relays and check ALL the fuses, there's only a few. If you aren't comfortable doing that task, paying your local V-twin shop would still be cheaper than buying a fuel pump as a guess. |

After a no luck with anything else, I pulled the pump today. Pics below of pump that was installed in 2012. Covered in rust and goo. The filter was mush, like wet toilet paper. Bike rarely gets ridden but I always ran non ethanol and gave it an occasional drink of fuel stabilizer or SeaFoam, to try and keep everything clean. |

I did. Not only were the metal parts all rusted but the plastic wire coatings were slimey and would come off in your hands. I purchased a whole new OEM assembly from EBay, cleaned the goop from the tank and it is back to running like a champ! |
