Quick question while I'm fighting with my exhaust... I know the procedure is to loosen everything up, attach it all, and then start tightening things up from the heads down to the end of the exhaust... Are all the exhaust brackets set up for the same dimensions? I know there's the difference between the old front exhaust mount and the upgraded Y bracket. I know I've seen some different rear Z-brackets. Mine has a rectangle cut out of it, some have more of a + sign cutout. Some of the exhausts have tabs welded to the rear of the exhaust, some have a metal bracket/straps that wrap around the whole exhaust. Are all of the brackets interchangeable with all of the exhausts, or are there certain ones that need to be paired up to make it work properly? I'm trying to swap my V&H exhaust with a stock exhaust, while at the same time replacing my old front mount with a newer Y-braket, and of course have to replace the rear mount with the Z bracket. I sourced all 3 parts from different places, and am having no luck getting them to line up. Before I keep fighting with the alignment, I just wanted to make sure there isn't a chance I have a mismatched set of brackets that won't let things line up for some reason. |

"... and then start tightening things up from the heads down to the end of the exhaust ... Not answering your question ... but I take multiple snug to torque passes by hanging everything & gradually snug fasteners starting with the header & front mount working to the muffler mounts. I'd never tighten the header then work my way down ... but that's just me. (Not broken anything yet with my S3 45K miles, Uly w/24K & other Buells of misc miles) DAve |

I unfortunately didn't get to loosen up the exhaust studs to see if it would help. I looked at them, they looked a little rough, and this late in the riding season I knew if I tried to loosen them up, I would've ended up snapping one of them just out of pure bad luck, so that's the only thing in the system I left tight. For now I'm going to just leave the V&H on so I can finish out the season, then once I park the bike for winter I'll try again. |

Soak the bolts with plenty of penetration oil and try loosing them back and forth. Don't force anything at all! If things or brackets don't line up with each other you could file the slot or hole a bit more. Also if you use some exhaust clamps it's easy to have them line up with holes and engine brackets. If i may say ,the Maz exhaust bracket is the best solution. (UKbeg buell forum) |

Currently this is what I'm working with. Too far apart to file any holes bigger, and I can't really get any clamps on the exhaust because the current tabs are welded on, and I don't think it's worth cutting them off this early in the game.
The 97 parts manual shows different brackets, and based on the marks on my exhaust, it looks like these are what my exhaust was previously mounted with...
I'm thinking for now, I may just get some steel and make some straight brackets like what's in the service manual just to get things moving, then see if I can sort out this bracket later. Does anyone here happen to have any of the brackets shows in the 97 service manual or one that looks more like the one in the 98 parts manual(with the + shaped cutout shown below) just to give me a measurement on the length from one hole to the other, so I'll know if it's purely an incompatible bracket, or if it's actually an alignment issue with my exhaust...
Definitely won't be forcing anything. I'll spray down the exhaust studs, maybe pick up some of that Kroil penetration oil I keep hearing people talk about lately, heat up the nuts, and try to work them off slowly. Like I said, that'll wait until riding season is over, just on the chance that I do manage to break one. |

This is pretty close to the headache I ran into with the exhaust on my S1. I started with a stock 2" header and a Borla muffler that was poorly mounted by the previous owner. I went through all sorts of combinations of sh*t in order to get it acceptably mounted. Nothing lined up correctly and it was a complete PITA every step of the way. I contemplated going back to stock, but good luck finding a reasonably priced stock 2" muffler to match my header. Yet 2.5" mufflers appear to be plentiful and cheap, but good luck finding a 2.5" header from an S1W to go with it. Long story, short.....I can't help much. Good luck, I understand the frustration you are going through. |

The Maz bracket looks really nice, but it wouldn't work on my stock exhaust. Only the race exhausts have the header there. On mine the exhaust has welded tabs that fit right into the exhaust mount. The little brackets on the rear of the exhaust are what I think I need to make though. I might've been getting confused with years and brackets. The rear bracket I have is this one...
That one is listed by St. Paul HD with part #S0115.G and lists it for 98-02 Buells. https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.com/products/s0115-g-genuine-buell-muffler-mount-z-bracket-98-02-tubers-b2l This is the style that's shown in the 1998 parts manual, and is listed on ebay for a 98 S3.

Crazy someone would want $20 for a broken rusty bracket! Lastly are these, which I believe are the pieces I need, and are what's shown in the 97 service manual, and come with an even crazier price than the broken rusty bracket! They say they're for the race exhaust but appears to be the same idea, although the dimensions might be different. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buell-early-REAR-muffler-support-hanger-tabs-FROM-RACE-EXHAUST-1994-2002-/282304605334

I agree, I think for now I'm going to make some like in the last picture. The ones on ebay are $38 + $8 for shipping, so I'll just chop some up myself. Brother_in_buells... I'd appreciate it! The guy on ebay sent me pictures of bracket with the + cutout, but the pictures weren't very clear and actually made that bracket look shorter than the one I have. |

I have one of the brackets and it looks like a match to the last image posted above. In my 96/97 S1 parts book, the p/n is 65333-94YA "Support,Muffler". It's stainless steel, #10 gauge (I measure 0.135" thick), 2.8125" long:

I appreciate anyone offering Buell parts for sale....hopefully these parts can be used to keep our scoots on the road. Now back to the muffler bracket thread. |

aah very thorough picture, I appreciate it! That'll be very useful. I spent a few minutes getting my bike back together last night since I've had to drive the truck the past few days. That bolt/bracket right by the oil pressure sensor is a hassle! I can't even imaging how much such a sad looking bracket could really be doing. |

I just noticed an error... the 3/4" radius on each corner should be a 3/8" radius. |

Funny I have had these drawn out in CAD for years. I have cut a few for my bike-bikes since I bought race kits and they were missing. I can see what I can do if people need them. Buell had two different versions, the ones used on the early bikes S2's were just a little different than the ones used in the race kits. But they all work the same. I got a few quotes back and of course it’s just like anything else, the more you order the cheaper they get. Are you guys wanting the hardware with these as well? (Message edited by Red93stang on October 30, 2017) |

I was moving some stuff around the garage, and pulled the aluminum swingarm out of the box that I bought a while back, and was surprised to see it actually came with the exhaust bracket, which I wasn't previously aware of. I noticed when I looked at it that someone had put on a little extension on one of the bolts. I'm not sure if an aftermarket exhaust was designed to work that way, or someone else had a stock exhaust that wasn't lining up with the bracket, but it made me feel slightly less crazy knowing I need something similar and someone else was already dealing with the problem haha.

Resurrecting here, I could use a set for an S2 if anyone knows the difference. The part number is the same for S1 S2 in the parts book. I’m still on the hunt for a reasonably priced stock S2 muffler if anyone has one. Reasonably, I mean $150 - $200. I looked at those brackets David Uden has, I just can’t bring myself to buy them. Buellster has one in stock for $5.75 + $14 shipping, no way. One other on eBay for $17 shipped. Stang or s1owner, I’m game. |

Aaah! I had this 4"X4" stainless plate saved in my ebay for months and i couldn't remember why. I just deleted it about 2 days ago, and seeing this post come back reminded me. I need to make exhaust brackets! Now I've gotta go try to find that piece on ebay again haha. |
