I bought a set of wheels that I was told were early PM wheels. I need to establish that they are period correct for my S2 in order to use them on a bike with collector plates (and way cheaper insurance.) I contacted PM and they told me that they were not PM wheels but likely Custom Chrome. I can't get hold of Custom Chrome. I see I can buy a 1996 Custom Chrome catalogue on eBay for $50. Any better ideas?

Thanks guys. I know what proper PM wheels look like. At the time, people were asking $700 for a set and these were considerably cheaper. I see someone is asking $450 in the classified section here for proper PM wheels. Wish that had happened before I bought these but that was a couple of years ago.

However, I have these now, for better or worse. The guy I bought them from said they were aluminum that he had had chromed, although they are quite heavy. Since I'm generally riding two-up with 50 lbs of luggage, I'm not too concerned about that. I'd still like to use them. My idea being that if I have a spare set, I can swap them out on the white-framed S2 or the grey-framed S2T in order to manage tire life when setting out on a trip. In the past, I've had to toss half-used tires to start fresh and avoid a tire purchase at the halfway point.

They don't show in the current catalogue but what I need is to find them in a 1990s catalogue to prove they are "period correct." Or get Custom Chrome to do so for me.

The PM aluminum are also heavy too. try a search on 1990 catalogue.

Magnet

<edit> Use a rare earth magnet, if it sticks hard it's steel.
If it barely sticks it's nickel over aluminum under chrome.
