Hoser,

Thanks for the information. What year did the pressed cranks appear in production bikes? Are they readily available and will they fit '96 cases without issue?

Thanks for the benefit of your experience.

fellers: I measure seat height from the ground, so my S2T peg height doesn't even enter the equation.
secondly, I've owned an S2 since '97 and an S3 since '00. In stock trim, the S2 HAD THE LOWER SADDLE HEIGHT.. wanna rethink that "ack-chooly" 'correction' based on your aftermarket Corbin saddles, Lornce?
Now, being that i presently run an S1 seat on myS2T sans tail (or cod-)piece, my seat height's still up from stock.
maybe it's just one of those zany anglo-reversals, like that driving on the left hocus-pocus...
as to the admittedly 'learned-sounding' theory of higher gyroscopic effect on a motorcycle's handling due to heavier flywheels, i'm not too keen on compensating, through theoretical physics, shortcomings in tracktime or mileage.
It's very, VERY cool theory, but I just don't feel it in the twisties or on the track, lads ...but then agaiin, at only 213,000 miles on my S2T, and 8,000 on my S3T, maybe the new techno-theory will be ...um....
"foam Compression" in the S2T saddle?
actually, I pawned off the notorious S2 "Organ Grinder" seat years ago, lest my fertility play second viola to the S2T's stock attitude
sometimes ya gotta just put the sliderule down and put on the mileage

My owner's manual for my S2 lists the seat height as 29.75 in. OK, half the matter solved. Someone dig out your S3 owner's manual and we can put this one to rest.

S2 = 29.8" (755.6mm) [Source Buell P/N 99489-95Y]

S3 = 29.5" (749mm) [Source Buell P/N 99489-98Y]

At least that's what they were supposed to be.

ok- i just found my '95 and '96 owner's manuals AND the '95 & '96 sales brochures listing the specs on all the models (including the '95 cal. version, that i own, which, on another thread, is said not to exist)
buell s2 (incl. "T"; ) seat height: 29.5" (NOT 29.8"; )
buell s3 seat height: 29.5"
i'm thinking that recall/replacement shocks could have thrown off the "live" measurements taken by both lornce and me'sef.

now if all y'all'll excuse me, i gots me some twisties to negotiate

Lornce :

The " low inertia " flywheels were introduced for the 2000 model year , they are available but not cheap !! . To make em fit the right crankcase will need to be machined , a straight forward operation involving removal of .085" from the inboard face of the main bearing boss . there is a pressed in steel sleeve here which is the rh main /outer bearing race , the material to be removed is the inner wall of the crank compartment. Correct selection of speed , feed rate and a sharp cutting tool is needed due to the dissimilar metals being cut , make sure you have a great deal of trust in your machinist !!

Thanks a LOT guys... I expected to come back here to two or three posts mostly asking me to explain my question in more detail : ).

Sooo... If the X1 has the least amount of rake and the body from an S1 can be made to fit... Maybe that's the route I'll go. I have an XB so I doubt the rake will feel too steep for me. Anyone know what the wheel base is? Sounds like the X1-S1 hybrid is a decent plan but I have to admit I don't really like the look of the X1. Anyone have a pic or link to a pic of one of these hybrids? I've always liked the look of the S1 quite a lot. But I like the S2/3 bodywork a lot too...

Anyway, Thanks for all the responses : ).

"S2's look super sexy with S1 tanks. I don't like the look or feel of those bikes, though." Rick a

Hey Rick a,

You gotta leave the straight roads of the swamplands to appreciate the S2's. Head up to the North Georgia mountains on one and you'll rapidly learn it's virtues.

hehe - I stopped in at East Troy to say "hey" on my way back from Aaron's place a couple of years ago. A guy standing behind the reception counter asked me where I was heading, when I told him I rode from Philly to Denver and was on my way back he asked "Stock seat?" me: "yeah" guy: "Sorry"

: )

I managed to pass through 37 states on a single trip and the seat never bothered me.

Funny story is when the Buell R&D folks, back in 1995, were testing another S2 seat. I got into Phoenix late one night and called the factory, left a message..."send MY seat". It was Fed Ex'd and waiting for me at Jerry Johnson's when I arrived at 3:15PM the following day for a change of tires and service.

Next morning Erik and I had breakfast with Steve Anderson to review the cover story of the bike that would be announced that afternoon....The Buell S-1 Lightning.

Too funny....year, must be my butt.

yeah- maybe having put over 150,00 miles on the saddle did my boys in, most of it very hard mileage.
after switching over to a custom seat for the next 30,000 things were better, and the s1 saddle i've run right up to the present 213,00 mile mark has been like heaven, by contrast.
of course, when i got it, i had brunch w/erik followed by a late luncheon with mike corbin and then a night of boozing with willie nelson, and then a bracing breakfast with prime minister tony blair and courtney love, you know, to announce the newest addition to the OAS, 'santa buella', then i jetted down to rio for an evening of good rioja and merengue dancing with mert lawill, gary nixon, erik buell and jennifer lopez, who, you know..checked in with me before announcing that ben affleck was out of the picture and buell would be unveiling the xb series.

seriously, though- thanks for the info, esp. in terms of my frankenbuell. it is VERY cool to be able to contact someone with an 'inside track' on this stuff, court, and i appreciate your elucidations more than my good-natured sarcasm might imply

You two are killing me. : )

Hey Tramp, I hate to sound like a "know it all" (I ain't) but that seat on your bike looks like an M2 Cyclone unit, not an S1....

thank you, lornce- that would explain why i'm the only guy who "doesn't find the S-1 seat uncomfortable"... I always mix the two up, If THAT sounds at all possible outside the short bus
Cheers, man- J
