General motorcycle question.... are shift shafts and teeth count typically standard between most motorcycles? I need to grab one of the small levers that clamps onto the shift shaft, #49 in the picture below. I see the part is listed on St. Paul's site, I assume there's probably cheaper versions online somewhere that cost less than $30+shipping, I know I've seen people use non-oem parts there. Does anyone have any leads as to what names those parts usually go by for me to search online, or have an idea if they're all pretty much the same, or if all bikes have different diameter shift shafts with different teeth counts on them?

The splines are the same as a sporster too.
It's a popular roadside repair if you dropped your bike.

The one on St Pauls site is actually cheaper then any of the aftermarket options. There is a billet one for like 15 or 20 more. Did all this research before

Good to know. I'm surprised, I figured something like that you could get from China for $5-10, and I just didn't know the right keywords to search for.

I'm sure you could get a cheap China crap-casting piece...and it would split in half either the moment you torqued it onto the shaft, or about five miles into your first ride.

Do NOT wedge a screwdriver into the split to remove these from the splines.

Do NOT over-torque the fastener bolt.

When you have it off the shaft, you'll see a recess in the splines - that's where the fastener rests, and keeps the lever from sliding off the end of the shaft. The splines keep it from rotating. You only need to tighten the bolt enough to keep the bolt from backing out, not enough to squeeze the lever onto the splines.

When you install, give the splines a coating of anti-seize and use a drop of low-torque locktite on the fastener. That way you can remove the bolt, and slide the lever off the shaft easily. No monster torque needed, no prying required to remove.

My current shift lever is a bear to remove. I bought one of the faucet knob removers people recommended and it pops right off now.

I was curious if the shift shafts are a standard size across the industry because I see a handful from bikes like R6s on ebay for about $7, but I didn't know if they'd fit, or if they're all different. I'll just keep an eye out for a used buell one, I don't need it right away.

Other makes are not interchangeable unfortunately.
Heck even within other makes they arent. I have tried diffrent year R1 shifters and their spline counts are not the same. I spend money sometimes just to see if the part can work its a 50/50 chance that I loose 95% of the time!
