Energyone does not recommend synthetic oil with there clutches. Reading forums leads me to believe it is the sync 3 they have a problem with. Normally I use synthetic redline 20w50 or 20w50 Castrol. I am tempted to go the 20w50 Castrol based on the energyone warning and stay away from synthetic oils. Any recommendations? | ||

I've been using Amsoil 20w50 Vtwin engine oil in my primary for years with zero problems. I found that they shift better with Amsoil vs any of the HD oils. We also use it at the store with no problems. | ||

As far as I know Amsoil isn't available here in the UK, if it was I might try it though | ||

I use Harley’s formula + and no problem at all with the energy one clutch. | ||

What I have read is that hd formula is basically 50w. I am thinking a good straight 50w. (Message edited by Mhlunsford on October 10, 2017) | ||

It's stinky like differential juice too. So they must add Sulphur or Zinc or cat piss or fish bladders to it. | ||

and the answer is: For the most part, Mobil One, Amsoil, Redline should all be good. ATF Type F. The only one that we have had problems with is the Screaming Eagle Syn3. - the AFT in the manual gearbox - that one I would pass on.  | ||

We also use it at the store with no problems." I had some old Amsoil 20w50 bottles in my garage, I took a look at them on my way out this morning. It said on them that they were good for transmissions/crankcases/primaries and a few other things. I was a little worried lately when I had been reading about people using gear oil in the primary and saying not to use normal engine oil, but it looks like the Amsoil is made for all of it. | ||

The issue against gear oil is that it goes after the insulation on the windings of the alternator in there. I'm not sure what chemical would be awesome for gears and bearings but death for magnet wire insulation so I have no idea what to avoid! This is why I am too chicken to deviate away from what H-D tells me to use. | ||

I am going to say that basically any 20W50 is good as long as it says will work with a wet clutch. Synthetic is better it you got the $$$. Amsoil is probably the favorite. I use Redline as it was a favorite used in my dirt bike days. I recommend Drag Specialties "gear and chaincase oil for sporsters". It has been the best shifting oil I have found when used with the Energy 1 clutches. | ||

I normally shop at a auto stores for oil: After readying, I might just go with Castrol 4T 20W50. | ||

Sulfur is what is in the gear oil which kills the rotors. Don't know about Energy 1 clutches but I use Mobil 1 15W50 everywhere with good results. |
