On my way to work this morning, punched it an motor spun then clutch grabbed. Time for a new clutch. This a X1 motor with 35K miles 1250 Kit - not much beyond stock. I was looking at NRHS they have kit with tool for $190. Any other recommendations ? |

You sure it's adjusted correctly? That's awful low miles for a failure. |

The clutch compression tool? I believe people usually just use a cut down piece of PVC pile, a flat steel bar/plate, and a bolt.
It looks like you can skip the steel bar if you just buy a PVC end cap and drill a hole in it for the bolt.

I did it like the top pic. I had already used aluminum bar stock to make a primary lock tool. Then I drilled a hole in the middle of it so it could double as the cross piece for the clutch tool. 5mins more with a recip saw and piece of leftover PVC drain tube....I was in business. Worked great. If photobucket weren't A-holes, I could post a pic. |

"If photobucket weren't A-holes, I could post a pic." Seriously, they ruined half of the internet and I'll never trust them again. Speaking of making tools... anyone have measurements for the bar you need to lock the primary? and then you round the edges so it fits nicely into the gear, right? I'll be in there this fall to replace the detent plate and the clutch spring plate so I'll be making all of these soon enough. |

the primary lock tool I made from thick shelving - I think around 3in in length. |

From the notes I have, the primary lock should be 4 1/8" in length, 1" in width, 1/4 thick, edges rounded to a blunt point. It doesn't need to be exact, but thats the jist of it I can't advise on the clutch kit itself, but I'm sure any kit available from a major supplier would be fine. Mine wasn't slipping, I just wanted to get rid of the spring plate. I bummed some extra plates off of someone here. |

I've heard the HD plates are supposed to be really good in these bikes, otherwise I think the Barnett kit gets good reviews from people on here. I also just picked up a couple extra plates from someone on the forum and will be swapping them in for me spring plate. |

Mark, you read the site wrong. $190 is the tool with the clutch kit. The tool itself is about $50. |

I thought he misread it at first too, but after I re-read his post he got it right... "they have kit WITH tool for $190." Tool itself was about $60, or get a combo of clutch/tool for $190. } |

On a separate note, if the rivets are worn out and everywhere in that clutch, which they usually are at 25-30K, check your basket for burring from the rivets, as it and/or the hub may be toast as well. |

I put the new energy one extra plate kit in used valoline vtwin 20w50 SAE . The original plate with rivets was fine. Used the energy one tool . Whole thing was done in 3 hrs. Pulls much harder now. |

anyone know the thread needed ? For those who haven't already recognized the nut from the top picture Upthemaiden posted, you can just use the well nut from the clutch adjustment assembly, part number 11730A, as the nut on your homemade tool. I found I had to compress the spring plate nearly all the way in order to put it back together again.
