Thanks to Dan at NRHS, my 02 Cyclone is running like a top and I have had a great summer riding it so far. It's a completely different bike, and it's awesome. Except for one thing.....The stock shift lever sucks.

Can anyone recommend a better clutch lever to deal with the lagging and heavy pull. Was thinking of a long pull lever, as the answer. Any input would be appreciated. I am not looking for some way to make shifting crisp, just a better way to make the pull nicer for this soft and stupid cable.

Hey Kris,
glad to hear the bike is running great. Are you sure your clutch cable is adjusted properly as it should not be a "soft" feel.

Are you saying the foot shifter lever sucks, or the clutch lever that sucks? Or you're trying to help the one by changing the other?
Anyway, I heard of if the primary chain is too tight, it can make shifting sticky. Apparently the official shop manual instructions result in a slightly too-tight primary chain.

I second the question...are you referring to shift lever or clutch lever?
I am running the Buell shift lever mod and it's much less sloppy than the stock 'boomerang' linkage...but I keep having issues with my trans star detent wheel breaking e-clips and am beginning to wonder if the two issues are not related?

Sorry for the confusion. Just the pull on the clutch.

Shift linkage and everything else is good.

Marc, can you tell me more about the picture?

My cable was just dry. After I hung it up overnight with a funnel full of 30 weight (over a catch pan) the clutch pull became a lot easier.
"Adjusting the clutch" has two meanings (at least.) Adjusting the engagement point is with the little screw behind the clutch cover. Adjusting the free play at the lever is with the weird inline cable adjuster. And they affect each other, a little.
I also replaced the clutch spring with the softer one from a Ulysses, and that made the lever feel perceptibly easier.
(Of course the Baker 6-speed transmission swap I had done didn't hurt...)

If by "lagging" you mean you let the clutch lever out and it takes a bit for the clutch to grab and the bike to move, I second cable lube. Something is binding inside the cable sheath. If your clutch cable is binding chances are your throttle cables need some love too. Lube them at least every time you change fluids, if not more often as required.
