So I just purchased a 1999 S3 and it came with a carbon D&D exhaust with 2.5" stock stainless headers. Sounds real nice but I never really liked carbon fiber much. I found a Vance and Hines SS2R exhaust and am thinking about swapping. Anyone have experience with either or both of these exhausts? Just curious about differences in look after mounted up, sound, performance, etc. One of my other concerns is that carbon tends to dry out over time, whereas the vance and hines will last indefinitely.

I guess the other question is- if I switch to the vance and hines, do I have to do anything different with the tuning of the bike? the previous owner didn't know whether anything was done at the time of the D&D install years ago.

Thoughts?

I see you are not far from me, I had a d&d on mine and went back to stock. My d&d was not the carbon fiber though and I did not think it was that loud. Would like to get together and give your bike a listen sometime give me a pm. Thanks odd

You've picked possibly the two least-durable exhausts that can be put on a tube frame Buell. Supertrapp IDS (internal disc) mufflers are a whole lot more durable, can be tuned for both performance and noise, and IMO sound a lot better. Or, if you can find one, go full-race-kit (or look into one of Dean's reproduction race mufflers).

That said, my S2 has gone back to a stock muffler because I ride it a lot and I don't need all that racket going on. My S1W has a full race exhaust and I love it, but with the factory one-cheek-seat it's not exactly a bike I ride for long distances.
