Waiting on a tow.. Looks like there is a chunk missing.. Maybe the shifter bushing oil leak contributed to the crack? What do you guys recommend for a replacement? Might keep the sportster style since the parts are easier to find replacements for even though the newer style looks better. To be fair I like to use my whole foot to shift sometimes. But I also use toe only to. So I'm thinking of getting a billet shifter arm, maybe just one from HD to keep it simple. They're indestructible right?

Yeah, I'm thinking of upgrading it and getting a billet one and maybe black instead of chrome. Don't know what options are out there. Trying to do a search.. |

Whatever you do, don't overtighten it like you did this one. It's a splined shaft - they don't have to be "tight", just snugged enough to keep it from slipping off the end (and to keep the bolt from falling out). |

I'm not sure if it had been replaced but it might have been. I'm surprised this part can break. |

I might buy a black drag specialties or nightster one. So I can ride it.. Not sure what color yet.. Found so many people have made their own shifters on this site.. Twinmotorcycles has a nice shifter kit. Probably better to put funds towards this kit and not ride it till then.. https://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/artikel.asp ?mc=1&guid=&aid=11483&cid=109&s=&a=&aname=Buell_X1 _Shift_lever_LSL_ |

For me the boomerang one is better for me, I had the other one and after a lot of adjusting. Didn't get the feel I wanted. |

I like the boomarang too. Chews shoes less, pivots on the peg. You just have to replace the plastic dingus every now and then and keep it greased. |

Yeah I have a pair of docs that got marred pretty bad from a metal shifter. I usually ride with icon patrol boots now and they're pretty tough. They have elevated shifter nubs at the toe. Very comfy boot. I just started to break in a boot from bmw I got on sale that is neubuck leather and will be putting some kind of shifter cover on it. It's a plain boot, bmw urban boot. I use a rubber one from eBay for my other bike. It's only 75 cents but they don't have one for the harley.. http://m.ebay.com/itm/1x-Black-Rubber-Shifter-Sock -Boot-Shoe-Protector-Shift-Cover-Motorcycle-Dirtbi ke-/162536975732?hash=item25d7f56d74%3Ag%3AF9EAAOS wUKxYdd1i&_trkparms=pageci%253Acf5372d1-5a9c-11e7- b5ab-74dbd1809f83%257Cparentrq%253Ae5a6998a15c0a88 a98529a37fffbf486%257Ciid%253A3 I was gonna buy this neoprene shifter cover a while back. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Harley-Davidson-PC-Racing-Sh ifter-Skin-Shoes-Boots-Saver-Protector-For-PCSSHD- /371816906059?epid=623070404&hash=item569203bd4b%3 Ag%3AxggAAOSwMVdYEAt3&_trkparms=pageci%253Ae963022 3-5a9b-11e7-bd78-74dbd18005d6%257Cparentrq%253Ae5a 0b67a15c0a7e1127a1009fffc3f4c%257Ciid%253A5 This one looks interesting.. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Leather-Shift-Soc k-Cover-Boot-Shoe-Saver-V-twin-Skin-Harley-Chopper -/190975942323?hash=item2c770d9eb3%3Ag%3AYcUAAMXQU mFSi8ny&_trkparms=pageci%253A9830b8dc-5a9b-11e7-b7 f1-74dbd180c6d4%257Cparentrq%253Ae59ea25315c0a9cbd 9f73236fffbcc57%257Ciid%253A1 Not sure which would leave less wear, I think the neoprene one but it might crumble if left in the sun or shifter gets to hot.. |

The clamp bolt also fits into a groove in the shifter shaft. As long as the bolt stays in, the linkage can't fall off. Conversely you have to completely remove the bolt to remove the linkage from the shifter shaft. |

At least it'll be easy to get off! I had to pull mine off last fall and that thing was a hassle. I eventually went to harbor freight and bought a gear puller to try and pry it off. I had to grind down the claws a bit to fit behind it, and the round shape of it made it hard for anything to grab onto it. I eventually got it off though. I heard you can also put a pry bar behind it to get some leverage to get it off, but I'd be worried about cracking the primary cover if you put any pressure on it that way. Never had one that hard to get off, but it's a 20 year old bike so I guess that's expected |

Perhaps it was rusted together? I never had issues. Of course I've been in there a few times so it's had exercise. I just remove the bolt and push a straight bladed screwdriver in the slot and it slides out pretty easily. |

Yeah hopefully wont have a hard time taking it off. I noticed when it cracked it was still attached. I wondered if I kicked down on the bar if it would shift or still up shift, but I didn't want to strip the gear on the shifter shaft so I just got a tow. |

I think I got mine at lowes, the black/red one that was about $20. Don't use it daily or anything but it's never given me trouble. |

"I wondered if I kicked down on the bar if it would shift or still up shift, but I didn't want to strip the gear on the shifter shaft so I just got a tow. " I'd be hesitant to do too much with it, but I bet you could've at least used it to get the bike into 2nd or 3rd gear and just left it there till you got home, depending on how far you were and how fast the traffic was moving between you and home. |

Had not thought of keeping it in gear. I was 40 miles out and needed to take a few fwys so no go riding it in 2nd. Man the clutch pull on my bike is strong it's like those vise hand exercise grips. Hate to have to keep it pulled in for a long time. Had thought of changing the levera but with no N light, I think neutral sensor it's easier to feel out if I'm in gear with the longer clutch pull I think. Have not riveted anything before. I was thinking maybe not enough strength to get it done with a simple hand one. It's a coated steel rivet. Thanks, yeah I noticed my brake pads are real low. Will need brake pads soon so just gonna get it fixed the cheapest I can. |

This is a great low cost tool for removing the shift arm. Well worth having in the tool box.

That looks like a much better option than the one I got. The sharp angle at the end of the hooks on that one would definitely make it easier to work with. May have to pick one of those up. |

Never had an issue as long as you never over tighten it to start with. The srew is in a keywsy to hold the arm on it just requires snuging it at a low torgeu with some blue locktight.lookint at the puc above that arm was drastically over torqued! It also looks like the shaft may be stripped (Message edited by S1owner on June 28, 2017) |
