I recently purchased this X1 and will be making some changes. I'm starting with the tail and will post my progress here...

I'm going to try and match the screen from the tail lights in the frame holes.

..i like the idea there.I'm thinkin' of ,maybe, doing a tube style tail section/ setup on mine.Don't know yet....just festerin' up the ole grey matter that resembles cauliflower..got a lot of "to do" projects for the bike and around the house now that i'm retired(medically) from the work sector.Do like the design/ hole placement and the screen behind those holes .LT |

Haha, yes I know exactly what you're saying LT. I have been spending way too much time thinking of things "to do" to the bike. Heres an example- I relocated the horn to below the tank .hen crafted a bracket to relocate the ignition switch to the left side. I'm now working on my third bracket, LOL.

This is a connecting rod from a Briggs & Stratton engine. I'm thinking it can be re-purposed as an ignition switch bracket.

I've got some bad news.... you're missing part of your sidestand! |

I thougt I was. Is there supposed to be a rubber piece at the bottom? Is that all that is missing? |

Tail looks good. The end of the side stand looks cut off to me..

I was just messing around, I had assumed you chopped it up to do something with it. Yes it's missing a bit of metal off of the bottom. You are also missing the rubber piece, but you don't actually need that. Mine has never had it, and someday I just plan on cutting off the big piece that holds it. Has your bike just been on the rear stand since you bought it, and you haven't tried to lean it over onto the sidestand? or are you just joking back with me and I'm too dense to have caught that?? |

Very cool mod. I always thought that big aluminum subframe on the X1 looked kind of bulky. Your mod is a cool way of changing it. |

So you're saying my stand is too short... (that's what she said) ha But seriously yeah it is too short. And you know the lean angle is pretty steep which makes me think the ride-height has been lowered. I suspected that and was planning to adjust the pre-load on the shock. Does anyone have the factory ride height measurements? |

That makes sense! He probably lowered your bike, then just chopped an inch off of the bottom of the sidestand. I was wondering how you got through the whole process of him showing you the bike and you getting it home without noticing that the stand was too short to use, but that would explain it. I don't have any measurements because my bike isn't an X1, but the easiest thing to do is pull up pictures of an X1 online, and look at your bike from the side and compare things. It's hard to tell exactly on yours because none of the pictures you posted are straight on from the side, but the end of the passenger peg mounts should be right at the top edge of the swingarm, and it looks like on yours it's closer to the middle of the swingarm. The forks however look like they might have the proper amount of travel, but it'd be easiest if you compare the height of the top of the brake mount, to the bottom of the fork tube(that was the easiest way to tell the difference between an xb12s and an xb12scg). It's very likely he took the easy way out and left the forks as they are, since you'd have to rebuild them entirely to lower them internally, since you can see he didn't drop them in the triples. Then he could've matched up a longer 16" shock with the wrong 14" shock bracket which would've lowered the back end of the bike a bit. If that's what he did, it would be as simple as buying the proper shock mount and swapping it, then of course you'd need to fix your sidestand too. If you post some good pictures of your bike from the side, as well as some good pictures of your shock and the front mount, we should be able to give you an idea. Of course this thread is about your tail, and now we're talking about the suspension, so you can always post a whole new thread if you want to keep this one on topic. |

I intend to fill the holes with stainless steel mesh. PS thanks out to PurPony for the cool engraving on the air cleaner cover.
