anybody know if the starter switch is repairable or a sealed unit. I think the spring has collapsed as the starter button doesn't operate. |

I had the same issue a few years back on my X1, the spring was stuffed. You can take the switch apart. From memory there's a very small screw holding the starter button and spring in place so don't lose that. It's a conical spring and was impossible to buy separately here in Oz. I did find some similar sized ones at the wreckers but ended up using a spring that holds the battery in place from an old radio I already had. That was several years ago and it's still going strong. |

I have a 1998 S3T, and the yellow plastic starter switch cover, the inside seats/holes broke, so now the switch is holding on by its outside pins/holes. Unlike the X1, man am I having a dickens of a time finding part 71830-97Y, the switch assembly. Two part question: since the switch just closes a circuit, activating the starter, I would *assume* another model's starter switch ought to work? --assuming the wiring's plug housing is similar, or the pins could be moved to the (1998 S3T's) plug. Any notions on that? Part 2: I wonder how that dang yellow plastic switch cover is held on. I today's world of 3-D printing, I would imagine if I could somehow *get the cover off* I could have it copied, and then (in a perfect world) put it back together. Anybody ideas about how to remove it? Would be nice if the pins holding it over the starter button were sprung somehow .... Figure'd I'd ask. |

Vinylone: You're correct, any switch/controls should work. It doesn't even have to be off of a bike. If you're find cutting/soldering a few wires you could pick up any controls you like on ebay from any bike, and just match up the right connections to the plug from your existing switches. Obviously easier if you pick up controls from another buell, but even then you might end up with different length wires or different plugs between the S1/X1/Tuber/1125 years. |

Just to go for a first-of-spring ride, you could unplug the horn wire from the horn and run a jumper wire made from a male 1/4" blade terminal to a foot and a half of 20 gauge wire to a female blade terminal, shrink wrap over the connection by the horn, long enough to plug into the starter. Presto, your horn button is a starter button. |

"Presto, your horn button is a starter button." The reverse of that sounds like a fun joke to play on someone if you can get 10 minutes alone with their bike, and they have a good sense of humor. Watch them jump next time they hit the starter button and the horn starts yelling. |

Hey, I appreciate the work-arounds/advice/crazy ideas. And damn if that AU EBay part doesn't LOOK like the switch assy, even tho it says its for another model. Huh. I may just bite on that one. Mine's not in front of me (in the shop, getting a little love) but I'm gonna take a close look when it returns. I tip my hat at everyone who took the time to post. Much appreciated. Any other leads on this part, man, I'm all ears. I'm *trying* to keep the bike stock, which, at the moment it is 100%. T'was owned by a master mechanic, bought it from him a year or so ago ... --Eric (um, vinylone) in Boise, Idaho. |

I was just looking at those last week, the there's plenty of them on ebay. Most in the $20-35 range with some scuffs/cracks, then some more expensive ones in better shape. If you scroll through there's a picture of the plug on that one. just compare the plug to yours, and try to look at your wiring to see if it's comparable to the length wiring on yours. Any of the ones with the all black turn signal were from the S1/M2 and earlier bikes. Once the X1 came around, I believe is when the controls switched to the turn signal buttons with the yellow in the middle that the blast/xb/1125s had. One of those is what you'd need if you're trying to keep it completely original . |
