s1 owner, are all tail lights universal? I'm not good at anything electrical so I'm hoping these are easy swaps. |

If that post unscrews you could screw in a post that has a flat head with a hole (don't know proper name. Truss bolt?) that accepts a pip pin or spring clip (not sure what it is called). That's if the post location lines up with the hole on the frame. There was a recent thread showing pictures of this, don't have time to find it right now. |

Jim2, It does unscrew. If you come across the post let me know. There are some hidden corners of this place I have yet to find. |

Yup, that's the kind of latch you need. I think they're pretty much universal, but try to find one from a similar year just to be sure. If it unscrews though, you could just replace it with a bolt, or a threaded rod with a ring nut so it'd attach similar to the stock seat. Even a threaded rod with a hole drilled in it, then you could use a washer and a clip to hold it. As far as the tail light. I think some of the buells actually used the same exact tail light as the monster. I know the S1 did, not sure about the m2. If they're the same though, should match up to your seat pretty well. |

No tail lights will plug straight in you will need to splice the wires. |

I meant the bolt does NOT, my fault on that; sometimes I type faster than I can think. S1owner, how will I know which color goes to what? Is it in the manual? |

I found the tread I was referring to earlier. The bolt is called a hanger bolt. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/713 493/792490.html?1473678315#MB |

On the S1 One is ground usually its black. Then just test them put the break on and see what lights up. If you go with an led strip you will need a seperate plate light. On ebay search ducati monster integrated tail light you can get one cheap and it will have your turn signals built in. |

Wouldn't I have to splice the blinker wires too if that's what I ended up doing? |

If you bought a tail light with built in turn signals, you would have to wire those in to the light as well. Turn signals are usually just a standard sized bullet connector(some newer LED signals come with smaller sized ones, which I usually cut off and replace with the normal sized ones). If you put the same type of connector on the end of those wires on the tail light they would just plug right into your existing turn signal wires. You can get the connectors at lowes/home depot/wherever. If it's an aftermarket tail light that's meant to be plug and play with a ducati, I wouldn't even be surprised if it came with those connectors on it anyway, never messed with an aftermarket tail light to know for sure though. |

How would I tap on license plate lights though? I'd be fine doing the tail light, I didn't realize it was only 3 wires. But a license plate light needs constant voltage, unlike a brake light. Where exactly can I splice a wire if I were to get the bolt on led license plate lights? |

Use your wiring diagram in the service manual |

Just since I didn't have any luck figuring out what it was when I was digging through my service manual and looking at all of the diagrams... I have one little plug that was hanging right by where the sidestand switch was. I eventually came to the conclusion that it must be for the wiring for the license plate light. My bike is an S1 though, and the license plate light was originally mounted on that giant hugger/plate mount combo that had it's own light. I don't assume your M2 would be in the same place, and I'm not sure what the stock M2 had in the way of a license plate light, or if it was just built into the tail light... but if not, I'm sure you have something similar in your tail somewhere. |

M2 just has a clear panel in the bottom of the red tail light lens that shines on the plate. |

The wire down by the side srand switch is for something else. The plate line runs off the running light for the tail light. As Jim stated above. To add say two led lighted bolts you would tie those wires into the tail light. To make it easier to read the wiring diagram print it off your computer but print it as a poster it will print in 6-8 pages then tape them together. I used 3" packing tape and redneck laminated mine so I could use grease pens to trace. Also a magnifying glass works well to see the codes. I can not stress enough that before you mod learn this stuff and how to read it. This alone will save money and frustration! |

Yeahhh.. my service manual doesn't show that. Two questions though... 1.) can I tie the LEDs into my bypassed kickstand switch? 2.) can I put my ignition module behind the battery? |

If it does not you are missing something No use the correct wires You could but I would want it hidden and protected you move it there you are showing more wires. |

i mean if im not given a license plate connection, then i must have to hard wire it into something? for the module, i meant behind the battery, where the only time id be able to tamper with it is if the battery was taken off. |

Does the normal tail light wire still have power when the brake light is on? As long as it does, that would be your best/easiest bet. The only issue would be if the power happened to be cut to that wire when the brake was pressed, which would mean your plate lights would go out every time the brake light came on. |

There is always a constant flow of tail light, and brightens when pressed. That is okay to connect to? What exactly would cause the blow out? |

I didn't mean the plate lights would blow out every time you hit the brake, if that's what you meant when you said "blow out", I just meant depending on how the taillight was wired the plate lights could turn off when you hit the brakes, but would come back on when you let go of the brakes. I know tail light bulbs have a double filament, and one shines at one brightness and the other shines at another brightness. I just didn't know if the light was wired so the tail light is ALWAYS on, and when you press the brake lever the brake light also comes on, leaving both filaments giving off light at the same time. That's my assumption, and under that scenario, yes that would be perfectly fine to connect to. The other option would be if the current simply switched from one wire and filament to the other when you pressed the brake lever, taking the power away from the normal tail light, in which case the license plate light would be going off and back on every time you touched the brake. It sounds like that isn't what happens, but I was just mentioning it because that's the only scenario where you wouldn't want to wire the plate lights to the normal tail light. Hope that helps and I'm not just confusing you further. I understand a little about electricity but definitely don't know much of the terminology or really detailed stuff. |

Yeah I hear you, would it be okay to assume that when I tap on the brake, assuming everything is wired in, that the license plate light will light up brighter as the brake is applied? |

Assuming you no longer have the plate light ran to the rear fender this is what you do The black wire is ground Then you will have the orange with white strip this it tail light and plate light and red with yellow strip is brake light violet and black is left turn brown and black is right turn If you get a integrated light with turn signals you will have 1 ground wire, 1 tail light wire, 1 brake light wire, 1 left turn wire and 1 right turn wire the colors will not match the bike https://www.ebay.com/itm/272095628534 (Message edited by S1owner on October 27, 2016) (Message edited by S1owner on October 27, 2016) |

The license plate light should not get brighter and dimmer along with the tail light. The brake light current goes through a different wire that you won't be messing with. Also, some LEDs are dimmable, but any light you get for a license plate is likely just going to be on/off and won't ever change how bright it is. I actually don't know that's there any difference between the current that goes through the tail light wire and the brake light wire. I would assume the difference is just inside the tail light bulb itself, based on how the individual filaments are made, similar to how you can buy household light bulbs for a table lamp that are 45 watt, 65 watt, or 100 watt, all of off the same power source. |

The way it works is the orange with whit strip wire supplies a constant 12 volts to one filiment of the bulb this acts as the tail light and the bottom is clear allowing it to shine on the plate. The red with yelliw strip is switched power from the brake switches which supplies a brighter filement in the same bulb so when pressed it gets brighter. When going to led it acts diffrent. The constant power lights up say 1/3 of the led lights the switched activates the ither 2/3. Or the led can have stepped down constant power using a resistor then the brake power will give full power to the lights when activated. |

great advice guys, I cant thank you enough. The lights are on the way and so is the latch. Ill post pictures of the final masterpiece along with any concerns if there are any along the way. However, this may be far fetch for a buell forum, but anyone know where I can find the latch lock for the ducati seat? They don't seem to sell the latch with the locks, which isn't a problem, I just feel like it would be smoother with one. |

I think when most people part out a bike, it's more likely that they sell all the keyed parts together, the ignition, gas cap, and seat lock. Technically, I'd think a keyed lock off of ANY bike would match up with a seat latch perfectly fine. You should look and see if you can come up with some kind of button or lever that will pop a seat latch since these bikes don't have trunk space for you to be storing valuable things anyway. |

Sorry guys, this last quarter of the semester has been depriving me of anything that's not calculus or physics. I have the seat fully mounted, I have encountered a few mechanical problems after the installment. I still think my jets aren't jetted properly because my plugs still look black. I've encountered what I believe vapor lock. There was something stuck in the line a blew out and haven't encountered the problem since.. Before I post any pictures of what I did, I want to finish the sides by cutting some pexi glass covering the ignition module and under the sub-frame. |
