What's up everyone. I found this old tuber in a motorcycle shop here in town that belonged to the banditos and it was bad neglected. To the point were none of the 9 recalls had ever been fixed, but luckily I found a shop that is going to still do the recall work on a 20 year old bike for free. Granted I do have to take it from Amarillo TX all the way down to Houston tx. I have big plans for this bike as I have always wanted a buell. I wanted the xB when I was growing up but now that I have a tuber I love it. I am going to give it the xB treatment, wheels forks, and I even thought about doing the swingarm as well l, but I don't want to get in to far over my head. I'm thinking about shortening the tail section and going with a solo seat or something. Still kicking around ideas. But I will be having some parts come up for sale as I go so if anyone is interested in s1 forks or some nice pm wheels, headlight let me know. Here are some pics of it. Don't hate to bad except on the seat you can hate the seat all you want! lol I will put pics up later it says they are to big so I will scale them down tomorrow |

Looking forward to seeing it! Sounds like you found a great project. I had an xb years ago, loved it, but I have an s1 now and I couldn't be happier. Mine was a little rough around the edges to but I've enjoyed working on it as much as I like riding it. I didn't know there were sill shops that did buell recalls! I still have the older shock, does that mean there's a chance there's a shop around somewhere that sill does warranty stuff and would replace it with a newer one? I figured I'd just ride it till it does, then have to put out the money for a new one. You said you were gonna shorten your tail, did your bike come with the twin tail seat? Get us some pictures! |

Yeah there is only one Harley dealership in Texas that will do the recalls so I'm about to get a new swingarm, shock, tank mount assembly, front isolator, tank vent ect. So I lucked out. I'm trying to figure out how to upload the pics but keep getting told the pics are to big |

Nice. Couple of upgrades there. Billet dash. Sprocket guard/swingarm brace. Too bad the rear fender is missing. That original shock is a rare piece. Can't remember why they were recalled. |

They were recalled due to the eye breaking . |

How much slack is supposed to be in the belt? I'm new to buells. I've ridden it a few miles so far and everything seems to be good. |

I see an EBC rotor on there as well. Is the dash billet? it looks like a regular one but it's hard to tell from the picture. What's the swingarm brace you're referring to? Deadbuell: That's awesome about all of the upgrades. Maybe you'll luck out and end up with one of the newer aluminum arms. I love the bike though, looks festive with all of the colors. When I need to shrink down pictures to post I just open them in microsoft paint, an shrink them 50% and resave them. Would you be able to do me a huge favor, and when you're getting your recalls sorted out, just ask the dealership what the deal is with the shock recalls? Does HD still just have a stock of old shocks sitting around for recalls? Like I said, mine is an older one as well(I think one step newer than yours, with the metal sleeve cover but the longer mounting arm out front, but I'm pretty sure they were recalled and replaced too), but I figured I'd just have to live with it being the bike is 19 years old and Buell is no more. I'd love any information I could get. Make sure you keep us update on the progress! start a build thread if you get into as many projects as you're planning on! |

Nice colored canvas! It does not look like a twin tail setup! |

Try and get the rear axle, swingarm pivot, and front pulley in a horizontal line (the longest belt length needed). One way way to do this is to have a fat guy or two sit on the bike, but you can disconnect the shock also. Then adjust the rear axles so the belt has enough slack to just barely touch the swingarm under firm finger pressure. When in doubt, run it on the loose side. Too loose may marginally shorten your belt life. Too tight crushes important transmission parts and breaks belts quickly. |

oooh that makes sense. I thought that was just a pulley cover, I didn't know it braced the swingarm. I was looking for a welded on swingarm brace on the top of the swingarm, and was wondering if I was just nuts. Front rotor looks great, mine is supposed to be delivered today! Can't wait. I'm tired of my whole bike jerking back and forth when I try to use the front brake at anything under 5-10mph haha. The dash still looks like a normal one to me, but I'm still new to these bikes too so who knows. I agree with Brother in Buells, looks like a solo seat. Definitely looks longer but I think that's just because of the brightly colored seat cover and shape of the seat. If you want the tail any shorter it's gonna involve a hacksaw and an angle grinder. Thanks for the picture Court, so all of the 14.5" shocks are still good? I have the one in the middle, the 16.5" with the metal sleeve. Seems to work fine at the moment and no leaks, but I assume it's gonna wait till the worst possible moment before it decides to cause any problems. |

The shock that is on your bike will start arguments . Some like me see no issues I ran it with no problems and they do not have the leaking issues. Others will say they will break and send you flying. court can explain better but it was not a common issue under regular circumstances. |

Just sent off an email with my VIN to the HD dealership about an hour away that I know used to be really into Buells. I'll see what they say about my rear shock. I saw you said your swingarm was getting replaced too. I'm gonna have to look into that. I knew some of the older, more square shaped ones were recalled, but I thought that was pre-S1, and thought any of the swingarms with the curved arms were fine. |

The dash is stock. The recall swingarm will look the same but will have full weld beads rather than intermittent (best way I can think of saying it right now). I wish there was a way to trade you for the WP shock. I'd love to have one again. It takes a little longer, but I think it's a good idea to adjust the belt with the shock off. Then you have the ability to swing the rear wheel through its entire arc so you see that the belt never limits it's ability to move freely (and not put tons of tension on your output shaft). Once you've done that, you will have a better idea of how loose is good. Commonly, it's referred to as "scary loose". |

I was at at meet&greet talk thing with Erik Buell and he said the shock recall thing was an accountability issue with the supplier. One unit was found to be faulty. OK, let's look at the rest of that batch to see if they are also faulty. They were mixed together in a pile and they had no idea of how many were good/bad. Buell did the right thing and recalled them all to be safe. That shock is probably fine. Just remember that if it does let go, terrible things will most likely happen to you. Break in the front = pole vaulting Break in rear = tire slams into oil tank. If it were mine, I would probably just look it over carefully and use it while shopping for a new one. |

About the shock breaking ,there are new shocks that can go wrong to! The AST shock for example had also a serie that had issues with breaking a eyelet off. So you never know what's or when it's going to happen. |

I'll have to check out the welds on my swingarm. I planned on switching to an aluminum arm eventually, but when I was looking through recalls I see some of those had problems too. At least good to know before I start shopping for one of those. |

>>>Break in rear = tire slams into oil tank. Actually not . . . at least in my PERSONAL experience. I am the only one on Badweb, I think, who has ever had a shock break in half at highway speeds. I was south of Oklahoma City on I-35 at about 70mph. I have the pics somewhere and it was "photographic" . . . "exciting" and "surprising" . . . but not catastrophic. There has been a lot of conjecture and war stories but I tend to take them with a grain of salt (kind of a joke there since salt was the reason for the recall of the shocks). I am PERSONALLY unaware of one ever failing on a customer bike (mine was a bike under test and I treated it as a test mule) but some of the HD guys, with a wink and a nod, allude to having settled some case. I do not know if they did or not. |

By the way . . . the rear tire gets into the rear inner fender . . NOT the oil tank. There is a LOT of smoke and you will. . . . as the tire becomes molten, leave about a 1,152' very black stripe down the highway roughly going from the center line of the road to the shoulder. Oh . . and by the way . . . don't think about trying to put the kickstand down when you get it stopped. It'll only swing down about 1/2 way before hitting the ground. |
