I’ve joined the Old School Buell club: 2002 M2L, Volcano Grey/Orange -- 30,000km on the clock, and other than the Buell-branded Supertrapp muffler, it is bone stock. That colour combo makes me melt, so when a well maintained one showed up for sale in Ontario, I was obliged to buy it. I find the Supertrapp a little loud, especially at speed. I will either repack it or source a stock muffler –- whichever comes first. I’m guessing that a washable filter (ie: K&N) is the only option for the breadbox? My Internet searches for paper filters have proved fruitless.

The K&N breaths well. It should be oiled with filter oil after wash and natural air dry. Some people mod the inside to use a force winder type pine cone filter. They cut the inner snorkel shorter, block the two holes on the snorkel, and clamp the pinecone filter to the end of the snorkle. Of course they remove the old filter and lose the inner filter housing. This seems like it would be a good mod. If you look around this site you will find some pictures. A regular paper filter probable doesn't breath enough for the engine. Nice looking bike you have! |

That's a nice bike, if i was you i would remove the supertrapp, take it apart & repack, then replace the open end cap with a closed end cap. that is the good part about Supertrapp is fully tuneable and can make them quite too just you loose performance. S&S make a good filter to fit the stock CV carb, they flow very well too & you can now get paper element for them. |

Thanks for the ideas & tips. I really like the stock appearance of the M2, even the airbox. Despite it being a bit fiddly to get into and back together, I like it. It looks a little like a warp nacelle. Or something one could keep one's lunch in. The OEM paper filter that is in it is still good, but once that is done, it looks like I'll be getting the K&N. |

http://forums.supertrapp.com/showthread.php?1585-H ow-To-Repack-A-SuperTrapp-Exhaust I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression Supertrapps almost never need re-packing. Their website links to this 'how-to' though. |

I would try replacing the open end cap with disks and the standard cap before I went through the hassle of repacking it. |

Unless it's got a stack of disks in there, if it's too loud you may just remove a few of them... with a paper filter the bike might prefer the exhaust to be a little less free flowing anyway. I believe that is the standard cap for the internal disk muffler, should have a closed cap at the top of the disk stack inside, then the open end goes over the whole thing to route the exhaust away from the tire and rider. |
