Everything runs fine until I look at my speedometer every mile or so and its just not right. I'll be going 40mph, and the speedometer will drop to 25-20-15mph (while I am cruising at 40mph or so. I'll come to a stop and so will the bike, and it wont start for another 5-10 minutes. I'll make it 2 more miles and I'm right at the beginning again. I cant fathom what kind of problem this is. I'm assuming its either over heating or its an electrical. Can someone give me a start where to begin with this issue? Seems very similar to this guy's http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/285307.html?1242727745 (Message edited by m2who on August 17, 2016) |

Replace the Speedo rancor . Check the breather tube on the tank . Sounds more like a stuck float . |

Mtjm2, Would the float being stuck cause the bike to just stop? The speedo sensor would only fix the fluctuating needle? |

Ok Have you bypassed the kickstand switch? If not do so I had this issue and woulg do about 2 miles the bike would then kill like its out of gas . I could sit for 10 minutes and it would start and do it again. I went through all of it to find the switch would fail once it heated up! |

S1owner, so I looked at the kickstand switch, which I never knew I had and the previous owner must have snipped it. The wires are perfectly cut. Time to find the other end of the wire Edit: Thats probably why the wire is cut He probably already bypassed the switch because I can ride away without the kickstand up (already done it a few times). The wires should not just be cut they should be cut then tird together then soldered and covered |

I second the vent line from the gas tank. Next time it dies after riding two miles, as it starts to die, safely pull over and remove gas cap. If it clears up or starts right away again, then it's the vent line. The speedo issue may be unrelated, and just need replaced. I had the same symptoms exactly as you described as well. |

S1owner, well the kickstand wire itself is free, I havent found the other end. But I will and make sure its done properly. Bluebueller, I'll check that out and make sure its not clogged. I'll also clean the speedo sensor to see if that fixes anything. Thanks a bunch guys |

The kickstand switch has been bypassed just fine by the previous owner. The float is just fine The gas tank vents are not clogged The speedo sensor looked just fine when I took it out. I cleaned it off and put it back in. Today I rode the bike.. as you can assume 2 miles before it died me again. The speedo sensor is still not right. Might be time to replace that. Yet, at the same time will probably just bring it to a shop. I have tried what I could and nothing has helped. |

You can't always tell whether the speedo sensor is bad by looking at it. However, usually when they cause problems, other than simply not working, they blow the ignition fuse. Since that's not happening to you, it is unlikely that this is causing your stalling issue. Easy enough to disconnect and ride a few miles to find out though. Did you pop the fuel cap when the stall condition occurred? Did it make any difference? |

I rode it again today. I rode without the speedo plugged in for about two miles and it ran just fine until I plugged it back in. Rode about 100ft and it cut off before I could even take off the fuel cap. However, I did take it off to try and start it, along with unplugging the speedo. It took the same amount of time for it to start back up again, until it died another 500ft down the road or so. I checked the kick stand bypass right now and it was a bit saturated in oil, I don't know if that was an issue or not, but I cleaned out as much of the oil as possible from the connection. Someone mentioned to me to check the 77 connector, I have no idea where exactly that is. I tried to find it without taking off the gear case cover, but no luck. |

I think the 77 connector is only on the XBs... |

Well that makes sense, but either way I believe i fixed the problem. I cleaned the grounds and all the cables last week and made sure my petcock wasnt clogged. The bike road pleasantly a few miles and the speedo was working just fine also. Funny how things work. Thank you everyone for the help! |

great to hear. I recently had issues when switched to reserve - obviously a clogged petcock. It was ful of white crusty sludge. physically cleaned it up, then ran a bottle of sea foam. no issues since. these buells are so funny and can piss me off sometimes, but when it's running perfect - I would ride no other bike.... |

It has me feeling the same way. However, now that its in its prime, better than when I first bought it, I'm unfortunately going to sell mine before I leave for college. I'm going to try and find a newer x1 model in the next 2 years or so if they're still around. It was great buelling for a summer, honestly it was like riding the bike of my dreams, and I only see Buell in my future. |

Today it died on me again, odder than it ever has. This time it backed fired, stumbled and shut off. It wouldn't start back up, and when it did 20 minutes later it died when I dragged the kickstand. The kickstand is bypassed, so that shouldn't matter. I got it started once more and did as soon as I put it in gear. I waited 15 more minutes before unplugging the speedo and it seemed to turn over and ride me home just fine. |

I think there is a wiring issue start tracing the speedo wires back |

I'd be looking at the cam position sensor. |

There is no such thing on a Cyclone. |

There is a "sensor assembly" #32400-94 on my 2000 M2 which I recall is in the same place as the cam sensor on my old 1988 Sportster, but once upon a time I had a bad one and it ad a similar way of f**king up my life after it heated up some. I would often feel engine hesitation, followed by backfiring and crapping out. Another time I suspected the cam sensor had gone bad again but it was the ignition coil crapping out in Sacramento's 110+ degree summers. Same symptoms. IIRC the old Sportster manual I had said there was no diagnostic flowchart for these parts (ignition module, ignition coil, cam position sensor) other than replacing the electric components, the cheapest ones first and seeing if the problem vanishes. It would be nice if you could swap with known good used parts, but unless you've been down this diagnostic path before, you wouldn't have known good used parts like these on hand. I'm currently chasing my own starting problem and have had great luck searching the archives here. Cleaned up swingarm and battery grounds and replaced solenoid contacts but problem persisted until I cleaned out and replaced the relays and fuses in their mounts in the rear of the bike. The bike then would take forever to start, turning over super slowly, so I am looking to replace the starter clutch now. (Message edited by h0gwash on September 04, 2016) |

I had the connector to the coil pop off on my M2 once also, it could be that. |

Look for the wire coming from the speedo sensor to the speedo chafing and going to ground or a break in one of the ground wires from the speedo (there are 2 as I see it) especially in the neck area. Also at least 2 power wires from the fuse box and 1 from a diode. Check that area and internal on the speedo. |

Hogwash, I've been assuming it's the relays because every time I take them out and put them back it seems to start fine and take me back home. Reepicheep, I dont think its the coil popping off because I clamped mine on making sure it wont fall off again. Buell bert, I'll have to start digging to make sure, it's hard to check with all the housingson the wires. |
