Recently picked this up on eBay. I had previously replaced my D&D full system with a stock exhaust because it was obnoxiously loud. Now its too quiet. I saw the Supertrapp as a way to gain some middle ground. I was expecting to have to repack, but received the muffler without any packing whatsoever and a few chunks broken off the end of the perforated tubing.
Will this affect the operation or can I use it as is? Any suggestions on packing material are greatly appreciated. I count 14 discs. Do I need to purchase any more? Again, looking for more rumble than stock, but without too much highway drone. I see the front of the muffler is tapered. That means post recall, right? I hope this works out. If it does I will have the d&d for sale shortly. |

Less discs quieter it is. Call Supertrapp I believe they still sell the core with packing. |

You don't need any additional disks. 14 is just about right. |

There's also the option to remove the end cap, if you have to have it louder. |

Yup post recall, I have an extra NIB (pre recall) that I need to weld up before putting it on a bike, or offering it up. My bikes Supertrapp looked way worse than that when I opened it up. I had a few cracked welds and the baffle mounting hole was worn so bad it the screw head pulled through the sheet metal and let the baffle slide around in the can. I repaired the external damage, re packed it, and hammer-tapped the screen back into shape over some pipe. the front of the baffle slips over a pipe inside the can, so I put a sleeve of newspaper over that to guide that ragged edge of screen into place, and wrapped another tightly over the packing to help it all slide together. I'm sure once the bike fired up, the newspaper disappeared in no time. Did you get the S.S. outlet with it? Supertrapp sells a packing kit on their website, but you can also get glass packing from any parts store. Be careful with those threaded inserts on the baffle as well, I had to convert all mine to nuts TIG welded onto the flange because half of mine turned when I installed the screws. I run about 20 discs and I recall reading somewhere here 17-21 discs give the best performance depending on ECM tune. I also recall Supertrapps instructions saying never run fewer than I think 10 on a sportster, and 12 discs on a Buell (due to higher compression and backpressure probably) |

The "recall muffler" was only on the Pro- Series race muffler (riveted can) not either of the Buell disc style mufflers. So - no recall concerns with the muffler shown. |

I did get the turnout, as well as the rear mount and bracket. I called supertrapp, and they will sell a core for $160. That is a far cry from what I was planning to spend on packing. I think I can repair it by welding a short section of pipe to the end of the perforated tube. |

You could buy some new perforated tube https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0041CAFXK?pc_redir =T1 |

Nitro, there is an open endcap for that too. That will give you more decibels. I had the closed on mine, wasn't loud enough for my liking and I had 22 discs. Now running open with 10, and it is about as loud as Drummer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Open-End-Cap-SuperTrapp-405-3046-/331397172454?hash=item4d28cf8ce6:g:gzUAAOSwzvlW95zc&vxp=mtr (Message edited by Blackm2 on June 18, 2016) |

I had a SuperTrapp on a Dyna Twin Cam Harley, i had to constantly repack as when packing burns out you loose performance. also make sure you use copper anti seize on the disc studs as if you don't you will have them seize in and strip threads. more disc's increase HP less disc's increase Torque. more disc's more noise an open encamp with 14 disc's might be too loud for you as my supertrapp was not quite, & i have D&D full system and its not loud. i asked all the people who live near me no one minds . so run the supertrapp packed with end cap & 14 disc's first see if want more as it can be as loud as the D&D is no packing no end cap lot of disc's |

Thanks for all the input. I'm aware of the open endcap, but I don't think that what I want. I did find an interesting post of a guy that used an electric exhaust cutout as an encap for the muffler on his S1. Loud or queit with the flip of a switch. He had a megaphone though. Would be harder on the ids. I'll make sure I run antiseize on the disk retaining bolts. Most of the bolts need to be replaced. The heads look to be ground down on the side, only 5 out the six flats on the Allen head were remaining. No idea why. I looked at replacement tubes, but that would require cutting the old tube out of the end cap, and flaring the other end of the perforated tube to fit over the muffler inlet. I think of I can cut the flare off the the broken tube I can weld on a parts store exhaust adapter. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/WAL0/5106 5/N1560.oap?ck=Search_N1560_-1_-1&pt=N1560&ppt=C02 33 |

This should fix it for now. Cut off the perforated tube where it was flared. Used auto parts 2.5 exhaust adapter. It was shaped like an hour glass. Trimmed most of one side off so it wouldn't impede flow.

Now I need suggestions for rear hanger straps. The bracket was rusted and the straps couldn't be removed without cutting them off. |

What's the outside diameter of the muffler tube? There's couple of sources for stainless loop with tabs on the ends. Muffler component kind of places probably, too. |

Make and bent a strap from some not to thick stainless sheet and go from there ,you're handy enough! |

Why thanks! I ended up ordering some stainless worm drive hose clamps. It was the best I could find after scouring the internet. I guess there was an alternate design like this...
, but mine looks like this
It used heavier tbolt clamps, but are wider than the slots they slide through. So I couldn't use exact replacements. |

Thinking about getting a supertrapp superlight universal version like the one above to attach to the race header. |

Did you find a good candidate (model)? I was thinking along the same lines, might be able to make it quieter than the Race Muffler with the Discs and all. I didn't find one with close-enough dimensions yet. Maybe the 2.5" inlet was the problem. |

I think supertrapp sells the same exhaust as the ultra light universal with 2 1/2" inlet. I did find a pic on here of a buell pro series marked one which would be cooler to have. My thoughts are it sounds good with the factory race can. So if I want a quieter bike I should get another bike. Though if it was quieter I would ride it more so it's 50/50. |

Muffler is installed and I'm a happy camper. Looks good, and has the rumble I was after without being too loud. We'll see how long the packing lasts. I used a layer of stainless steel wool under the fiberglass, supposed to prevent the fiberglass from blowing out as fast. Did have a few problems. First the muffler rolled off the the work bench and landed right on the outlet side of the can. It bent about a three inch section. Luckily it bent back without too much issue. Then the endcap was missing one of the treaded inserts. It gave me a chance to use the unopened rivnut tool I got for Christmas years ago.
