Being deaf helps a little but you still get the vibes just before it falls apart. |

It's all relative. You can expect some clatter from the valves but if you hear stuff happening downstairs, it could be trouble. One common noise maker is the primary chain can be too loose and slap the inside of the case. |

relative to the fact that they were made of a conglomeration of cheap crap. |

(1) Loose Primary (Noisy) (2) leaky headers and not fitted properly or not tightly clamped exhaust joints.(Noisy) (3) Lifters love Synthetic Oil and Quits them. 3 things easily Fixed !!!!!!! (Message edited by ebutch on June 05, 2016) (Message edited by ebutch on June 05, 2016) |

Steady clattering from rockers - normal. Loud clanking from pushrod tubes - not normal. Noise from exhaust ports and signs of exhaust gas around flanges - not normal. Primary chain lightly rattling - normal. Grinding noise from primary case - not normal. Metal-on-metal clunk from bottom end - shut it off right this second! Everything is relative. Compared to some motors from the fifties in England, these motors are whisper-quiet. |

Well I know it is not the primary. This isn't my bike I am just trying to help/explain to someone that the top end will make clicking and clacking noises from the valve train. And it is normal . As long as it is not extra loud or in the bottom end. |

That is a good list of things to look at. Ill add that A broken engine mount bolt causes extra noise. |

Clattering from Rockers was something I had when my bike was new around 1000 miles. A few oil changes and a new oil pump gear and that noise I used to hear is gone. Primary chain out of adjustment will make noise. Rocker noises in the X1 are strange thing!! I agree Full Syn Mobil 1 oil was the cure for mine. I only use full synthetic big twin mobil 1 oil. This keeps my engine quiet and lifters pumped up quick after servicing. I have not had noisy rockers for many years. Been one the race kit too but still not much noise up there. 35k. I ride this bike fast on the highway on a regular basis. (Message edited by mmmi_grad on September 25, 2016) |
