I'm overwhelmed by the response here. I'm guessing the idea of exchanging one of the most respected exhaust systems for our bikes, and replacing it with the stock parts that most owners replaced before the ink dried on their paperwork, is ridiculous. That is one reason I've lived with it for two years. I didn't want to pay good money for parts that many owners threw in the trash.
But this is my only (running) bike. I live in a metro area where I need to travel quite a ways to get to an enjoyable road. For short trips the bark of the D&D does bring a smile to my face. But when I leave a stop light and run through the gears I draw way more attention than I care to. I may not be speeding (by too much), but I look like a squid to the general public and to law enforcement. For long rides the noise just becomes tiresome, and I would rather be able to use my helmet speakers to stream Pandora.

It seems to be popular opinion that on a low tuned bike such as mine, the only way not to LOSE power with an aftermarket muffler is at the expense of much more noise. Not to mention the reports I've read of durability issues.

Are there quiter alternatives? There seem to be. 500 for a can, and I still need to buy a header? This was a $2500 motorcycle. It has a bad metalflake respray. The orange frame and wheels are scuffed and stained. The engine case and valve covers are oxidized. I wish my bike looked like some of yours. Its previous owners didn't give it enough love. Could I refurbish it? Absolutely. But it would be in pieces for years, and I bought it to ride. I love it, and someday home to bring it to it's former glory, but for now I'll just enjoy it as is.

Sideshot

Just wanted to give a reference why I was looking for an economical way to make my rides more enjoyable. Maybe if I ever up the ante on the performance I'll rethink. But it seems that for the time being, going back with stock parts seems to make sense.

I have a D&D no problem with sound, but depends what you are used too, the D&D comes in four parts, the two header tubes the collector ( with mount for Y mount it is made for straight muffler i think the Collector could be made to fit say a supertrapp. i have used Supertrapp mufflers on other bikes & with packing and closed end cap they are quite, you can tune them, more disc's less disc's closed end cap with less disc's the quietest but restrictive. more disc's you add the more power ( but at some point the Torque drops & power goes up more. i have three sets of stock head pipes two 2" one set 2.5" all for the bent pipe front of muffler. but the D&D by far the best mounted strongest system i have i broke every bracket on every stainless muffler i have as i ride a lot, but the D&D have not broke that yet. you could possibly ask D&D if they could fit a baffle in muffler

I get it all my stuff is done low budget or from very nice people. But yes been about 3 yrs if build the version you see is the second complete rebuild as i crashed on the first It took me 6 months to find a good priced 2.5" header.
I will do as much digging as I can try to help you out I have a few connections.
Nothing wrong with going back to stock!!!!!
Might help us if you had a budget in mind for the parts?

Makes perfect sense to me.

Loud bikes, as you say, are tiresome on a long ride and annoying to neighbours and the general public. I applaud your choice to find a stock chimney.

The bikes I ride most often have stock mufflers.

The fact that stock Buell mufflers still make nice motorcycle noises makes the choice that much easier to live with.

I considered modifying the D&D, but I thought it would be of more value to someone else complete. I've had a member offer me a stainless stock muffler for 100, which I think is very reasonable. I would like to find a header for a similar amount. I've seen some go for 50-75 on other threads, but they are older and I don't know what the going rate is.

Brother_in_buells, I hope to someday have my bike looking that good, but if I would ever paint I would like to keep the orange frame, but change the plastics to white. Orange and black is too Halloween/Harley racing liverly.

That's a good price buy it up.
Here is a header on eBay may be worth contacting for size and material but my guess is it is stainless. Do not know if it will fit.

Rex and Robertl mention in this thread from a few months ago that they both have stock mufflers. Robertl said specifically that his was available to purchase, try pm'ing him or post to the tread and see if either respond:

ALL factory race headers are 2.5" rear-facing collectors

From the "there's one in every crowd" contingent, I offer the following.

Back in the day, we were offered a special buy of race headers (and I presume mufflers as well), and we could select either 2.5" outlet or 2" outlet. I believe I was the only one to order a 2" outlet race header - and, yes, it had a rear-facing collector. I put the 2" inlet SuperTrapp I was using previously on my S2. Obviously I upgraded to 2.5" at some point later, but I ended up selling that 2" outlet race header to Jack Reinhart. I want to say that Jack sold it to Abe Askenazi.

Am I a walking anomaly?

It sounds like a 2" race header is....just a stock S2 header? At least, that's what MY S2 header looks like....a 2" collector on an early race header.

But of course, the S2 pre-dated any of the race exhausts, so...

I'm curious what (if any) the differences were from a 2" race header, to an S2 header...?

I have a stock muffler on route. Just need to locate a header. I remembered that a former coworker had a cyclone he was chopping. He's going to check if he still has the stock header. I'm surprised they're so hard to track down for a reasonable price. I guess now that the chopper fad is over there are fewer being parted out. I spent a month looking for chin fairing hardware so I could put the X1 plastics on my M2. Gave up. Still have the fairing hanging from my garage rafter.

I'm curious what (if any) the differences were from a 2" race header, to an S2 header...?

As everyone knows, the OE S2 headers were made by SuperTrapp, and we tubes welded together with stepped ends (one tube fit end over the other). Once the supply of SuperTrapp header were used up, the company that manufactured the race headers produced 'seamless' replacement S2 headers. Yet these were definitely different than a 2" race header.

Outside of the smooth vs. stepped appearance discussed above, the biggest difference between a 2" race header and an S2 header is the shape/routing of the rear header pipe. The S2 was unique (or actually more of a carryover from the RS/RSS days - just out a bit further to accommodate for the frame being a bit wider to fit the belt drive), while the race header had the rear header shape/routing of an S1.

These 2 pics show the difference pretty well:
S2 OE SuperTrapp header

S3 (and S1, and M2) header

The 2" race header was NOT just an OE S2 header...

Gotcha.

I can see, in the side-by-sides, that the rear primary comes much further forward on the later (S3/1/M2) header, compared to the early S2 header which comes pretty much straight out from the rear port, not out and forward.

Conceptually, though...it sounded like the same damn thing ; )

Also, for those who have an S2 header and want to run a race muffler...it can be done easily. Simply get an automotive 2" to 2.5" adaptor (like a $3 part from NAPA), and clamp it between the header and muffler. I did it for years on my S2 until I scored a stock muffler.

Well, for some reason or another 2 to 2.5 adapter ended up with race muffler hitting primary drain plug or something.

muffler

Finally finished the install and was able to take a decent test ride. The process took longer than I anticipated. After removing the stock exhaust I decided I needed new studs. Luckily they all came out in one piece. I replaced them with Professional Products stainless carburetor studs. I also used copper exhaust gaskets. Seems to seal well but does put the exhaust flange almost to the head. They are pretty thin.

The install took me a few tries to get right. I couldn't get the muffler to seat fully on the header. I had to use the suggestion provided in the service manual and use a rubber hammer. The rubber bushings in the y mount ended up moving a little inboard. Also had to fabricate a new spacer for the front muffler mount since the D&D didn't use one.

First impressions: The neighbors are going to be much happier! It was so quiet I could actually hear how noisy the primary chain was! Its now adjusted and the shift feel is a world of difference. The tone was a bit dissapointing. It no longer sounds like a cammed small block. At highway speeds I can no longer hear the motor over wind speed. I forgot to shift a few times as I could not hear the rpm.
I don't think performance is too hindered. Overall the bike seems to run smoother. I might not have had the jets right for the old exhaust. It has a 195 main jet. Acceleration seems much less dramatic, but the speedo needle still climbs quickly.

Next up to improve highway experience is the Givi fairing sitting in garage.

It should be happy with a 45/195 setup in it and a stock can.

The "less drama" is a testament to how beautifully Buell designed their exhaust systems, for smooth, even power and torque delivery. You've still got all the power and torque, it's just...smoother and quieter, just like it should be.

You're discovering why my S2 has a factory muffler on it : )

My '95 S2 with stock muffler made a funny whistling noise similar to the exhaust noise of a well muffled VW Beetle of VW Microbus.

Anyone else notice that phenomenon?

Mine does that too - just at idle - it disappears once I get going. I found that putting a piece of wood in the tail pipe and moving it around would change or even stop the sound.

It's a shame because the exhaust is spotless and ceramic coated. I bought a scruffy one on eBay last year and it didn't make this sound. I gave it a quick coat of paint and have been using it since. The pretty one is on the shelf.

I also have an S1/S3 header and stainless muffler that I would love to use on the S2 but I would miss the green air filter cover too much!!

I have one of the 2" race headers. Like the other race headers it has longer primary tubes than the stock header. The primary rubes turn and point rearward before merging at the collector (like the 2.5 headers).
The stock S2 headers merge into the collecter while still pointed to the left - before it turns and points rearward.
The 2" race header I have also came with a prototype muffler that was welded (instead of riveted).

interesting post,
I too have a factory race S2 suppertrapp in amy collection, 2" inlet straight back I also have a S2 race header with a 2.5 outlet straight back? I have a factory race exhaust for my 98 S3T it must really rare as the muffler is aluminum instead of stainless. it is the only one I have seen like stated earlier they were stainless steel as I have one of those too.
