Disregarding appearance, what are the functional differences and disadvantages/advantages of those differences, specifically the FI/Carb fuel systems? Any problems with the FI on the S3?

Also, will an S1 tail go on an S3 without a problem? They appear to be the same chassis, but I better ask...hehe

You'll need a torch and a welder to put the S1 tail onto an S3. Different undertail frame dimensions.
As far as other differences it depends on your needs and wants in a bike and in your intended application/uses of it. They're similar and different in many ways.

J.C.......Being the owner of both an S1W and S3T, I can tell you there are very little similarities between the two. I should mention that both are 98's (not FI).

I find the S3T to be a bit more sluggish on acceleration. That can most likely be attributed to the additional 60# and greater wind resistance. They also handle completely different. The higher bars on the S3T allow for more leverage while cornering. But my S1W also has Crossroads Race Bars.

As Mike mentioned above, the S1 & S3 are different frames from the pegs back. The S3 has lower & more forward peg mounts plus a longer and wider tail section. It would take some work to swap tail sections. You'd need to add tubing to the S1 in order to fit the S3 tail section.

The real question is what to you want from the bike. I can't go more than about 300 miles a day on my S1. The S3T allows me to ride multiple 500+ mile days w/o too much pain. For riding 2-up, I won't even consider the S1 (even with a twin tail).

As for FI/carb....I'd choose the carb any day. But that's just my preference. The carb is easier to adjust w/o requiring a TPS reset (ie: dealer visit).

I bought a 99S3T in Feb of 99, and a 98 S1WL two years ago. Had ~44k mi on the S3T when I sold it in March.

The WL has racetech forks, updated shock, rearsets, probars and a race kit.

The S3 had Nallin Stg1 heads and a racekit.

The S3 feels safer (larger seat, fairing) the S1 more extreme. The S3 is more comfortable but no one looks twice. The S1 literally stops traffic.

I've done 960+ miles in one day on the S3. 2-up and loaded. I've dones 350miles in 2days on the S1. Felt about the same afterwards.

The S1 is what you show off to your friends and pick up girls with*. The S3 is what you show your parents.

Fuel injectors clogged once on the S3. Cost $45 for a new pair. No carb issues yet. Check with DaveS on his group buy of a device to reset the TPS on the FI bikes.

My S1 is still for sale. $4100 stock (stock exhaust but RaceTech forks) or $5200 with all the parts. www.highwayride.com

* note that you can't do this with the solo tail. Probably why my wife like the solo setup. ; )

If I was younger and single, I'd definately be using my S1W for picking up young women. I'd tell them that they could only ride if they could fit on the seat behind me: D

I've done several hundred mile days with my wife on the stock S1 seat and no passenger pegs. Ahhh...she's a trooper.

S1's are just more fun than you should be allowed to have on a road going motorcycle. Not a highway bike, but it can be done. I did a 1500 mile trip ONCE.

Rick...Your Bride sure is a Trooper, but I suggest you rig up some temporary passenger pegs for her. Is illegal to have a passenger without them in most (possibly all) States. Just trying to help you avoid a ticket.

She uses the axle bolt/nut. I'm probably going to put some kind of swingarm sliders through the axle there...maybe. What she really needs is her own bike!

Rick...The sliders sound like a good idea. Concerning getting her own bike, should be a piece of cake for you. Just a few parts each day in your lunch box and she will be in the wind by X-mas!

I have both an S1 and an S3 (a 96 and 97). I originally planned to sell the S1 after buying the S3 (several years ago now), but every time I looked at, sat on, or rode the S1 I just had to keep it. My experience may be different than others because I find my S3 handles just as good as the S1 (although the pegs are lower and will touch-down sooner). What is really noticable is two-up riding, not just for the passenger, but the handling really deteriorated with a passenger on the S1. I had a Twin tail on the S1 before getting the S3 and the passenger seemed to have their weight higher up (the back section of the frames on the S1 and S3 are different). The S3 handling was not dramatically effected by a passenger. My wife rarely rides with me these days, but I still find myself spending more time on the S3. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have rain gear packed in your saddlebags when riding in New England so that is often a contributing factor when choosing which to ride.
