Hey Guys, I have an 98 S3T and I'm having trouble with the paint on my fuel tank. I just had it repainted and now the paint is blistering. The guy that painted it is a real good painter and knows what hes doing with paint so that's not it. We think it's coming through from the inside, anything that will seal the plastic tank? Andy | ||

I'm getting some tanks done (my buddy is slower than slug shit) but we're going to use aircraft epoxy primer to keep the fumes at bay he says, hopefully. | ||

My tank got the " alien wrinkle " as photo below and I have seen other Buell plastic tanks go the same. They all will eventually with petrol/ethanol. I decided one last chance before I resort to an alloy tank by sealing it internally. It is early days yet but so far no damage to fresh exterior finish. Buellcati, is that the same tank you débuted last month... yikes!! There are hundreds of posts about the bubbled paint, one suggestion was to let it dry for months (over winter). I found this link the other day about the original paint colors for M2's http://buell-m2.net/index.php?page=210. I am sure more will chime in, it is past my bed time... good luck! | ||

This has been gone over many times. Use the knowledge vault or google works well also. In short these tanks allow the fumes to permeate through the nylon (yes nylon not plastic) it takes very special care, specific process and patients to paint and should be left to cure for weeks if not a couple months. Once cured you will need to fill the tank and put it in the sun to get it to expand so you can put the filler cap assembly on. | ||

Fyi there is no sealer that will work on the nylon tank. I know casswell says it will but when the tank moves and expands you will have a mess on the inside. This looks like a good solution, but it is not available for purchase. I will say I am not skilled enough or have the time for this labor intensive skin. Whoever did this is very talented and does excellent work. It would be nice if some company could make this. | ||

I just recently got a X1 custom tank cover made from f/g from 5-Odro who is a distributor for Twin Motorcycle. The cover had a sticker from it's maker (www.frank-parts.de). I checked the website but no covers for the other tubers. I would think that if they got enough emails and request's for other covers that they would be able to produce them. Mine was $300 shipped. For that price it might just be worth it to never have to worry about pealing again. "Someday" did one hell of a job on that cover. MM | ||

Since you mentioned my page buell-m2.net for the paint formulas (that I copied from this site anyways): Here is a picture of my fuel tank painted in 2008.  And here a picture of the same tank from 2015.  Never had any bubbling or any other issues with the coating from my painter. He was given the instructions from my page for "Carbon Black" and "Blazing Orange" and did quite a good job. I left the tank to cure over the long German winter in 2008. | ||

This has been discussed many many times on this forum. Not sure why there isn't a sticky on it somewhere, there's a lot of "groundhog day" subjects on this forum. Anyway, below is a discussion we had last year. My $0.02 included, some members have various theories about gas fumes penetrating the 1/8" thick plastic tank and causing the paint and decals to blister. No proof mind you, but it's presented as "fact." Best I can ascertain, the Buell factory sourced advice (provided by Al Lighton, a reputable source) on what paints and decals to use is the best advice. Gnutlethal that is Beautiful paint work! Thank's for Post General. My Black Betty Buell is original paint, the plastic around the seat cracked up too badly, so that was removed never to be replaced Front gard ok tank ok 100,000 ridden all year round & have done some long runs on it, so 15 years it's not blistered the original Buell thick sticker still there still good black paint still shinny n black. so i think the general on the money. cheers going for a ride soon. |
