I really like the looks of S1s and X1s without the rear fender. But I don't want crud, pebbles and dirt getting thrown up into all the crevasses in the wheel well. Right now I have a carbon fiber fender which doubles as a belt guard. I'd like to go with the "raw look" without it, just wondering if anyone has the best solution for doing so without dealing too much with the downsides. I was thinking of trying to make some sort of hand molded plastic inner fender nestled between the frame rails, but am not sure how/where to start.

I had made a stainless plate that fit tonthe underside of the seat tubes and fit snuggly up to the oil tank. Can secure with screws or wven zip ties sorry cant find pics.

My concern with going fenderless (and my S1 is fenderless) is that anytime it pukes oil, it spits it all over the rear tire. I'm currently fighting oil leaks from the rocker covers and there is always a spatter of oil on the right side of the tire. It has kept my rides shorter and my right hand turns rather unagressive.

I keep looking for a a cut down stocker just for some extra insurance, but haven't found the right deal yet.

96 S1 and never had oil on the rear tire or anywhere it was not suppossed to be if you are puking oil there is an issue some where.

Hense the.......I'm currently fighting oil leaks from the rocker covers part. I know where the problem is, I just haven't had time to tear it apart again to address it.

I had it all torn down this winter replacing and updating the oil pump gear, tensioner, grenade plate, XB rocker covers, etc. It is running great, but I've owned it less than a year and I'm still dealing with the learning curve of a tuber. I apparently overfilled the oil tank a little, so it puked. I filled the primary to the level I had read was correct. I guess I was wrong, because it puked a little. That has all sorted itself out now, and all I have to get fixed is the oil seepage from the rocker covers. I'll get there, I'm just working out the bugs and figuring things out.

The under tail will keep everything clear of debri at the oil tank area. the fender will keep the other areas clear. The best way I found was to run a rear hugger that had been shaved down still gave the minimalistic look but added the protection.
Keith we have almost all over filled the oil tank at one time or another as it does not follow the normal oil fill process from your aveage vehicle.
Have patients you will get it. Mine was a POS from poor and 0 maintanace from the PO when I got it but with all the info it was all repaired with my two hands and I little help from others on this site.

No worries, I'm getting it all figured out......slowly. Wish I had more time to ride it.

Stupid question......and I'm guessing the answer is no....BUT, are the rear fenders from early and late tubers interchangeable between the early and late swing arms? I only ask because my S1 still has the stock old style swing arm on it currently. I have a nice late tuber swing arm sitting here, but I really want to add some sort of short cut down hugger to the bike. If I'm spending money on a hugger, will any work or should I make sure it fits the late model swing arm (because that late model swing arm is what will get put on the bike next winter)

You will want a late model hugger they are diffrent.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll probably try to rig up a metal plate of gutter aluminum or something like that to cover the area both above and under the oil tank. The tail light wiring and some other stuff would be exposed without a fender, so I'm gonna try and weather proof and protect that wiring better before taking the fender off.

Hey S1owner, I notice you appear to still have the original White Bros rear shock on your bike. I do too. Are you worried about it? I've heard they eventually blow out and leak or something like that. Just wondering if I'm risking it by keeping mine installed,

There is alot of talk on the rear shock failure. And frankly alot of opinions but no facts so it gets very confusing. They did recall the shocks for a reason obviously. One disclaimer I will say is I have an xb swingarm now so no longer have this setup. But if I did I would still be running this shock!! Mine was inspected and rebuilt by Linder engineering and never had an issue with it.
