Ok guys,
I've owned several S1's and S3's over the years. I recently bought a 2002 M2 that wasnt running and have now got it going, thanks to many on this site. I know that the M2 is down on horsepower from the equivalent X1 or S3's.
My goal is to increase horsepower as much as possible without splitting the cases. No forced induction or NOS either. I read that the M2 flywheel is heavier but im not going in there to change it. So. What top end mod's (cams, heads, barrel, etc) would be best appropriate to get as much usable horsepower from my M2. By the way, i live at 6500 ft in Colorado.

The 2000 cyclone differs from its X1 and S3 brethren only in that it has different cams, exhaust (can only), and is carbureted. Swap in some hotter cams, and you should be making X1 levels of power. Not sure what jets to use at that altitude.

I don't think the M2 we get in Australia down on HP & flywheels light, ( nothing wrong with heavy flywheels )

2000 M2 US version should be slightly up on power over an S1 but not an S1W so something is wrong. also 2000 M2 has lighter crank than S1.

Nicasil cylinders get good longevity and cooling. 1250 kits are pretty popular. Heads from the XB's (2004 up H-D 1200 are the same with carb mounts already bored). That requires a custom engine mount. Get them ported for optimum power, but they're just fine stock. Any bolt in cam is fine...Red Shift seem to be popular and have good valve train dynamics. The above is good for 100+ HP at the wheel and awesome torque with stock like reliability if assembled properly. There's other ways to do it...but I think the above tends to work best.

Good day Gentleman,
I know a couple of you are referencing 2000's and 2004's.
So more questions.
All the data i can find says that all the 2000+ tuber S1's, S3's and the 2002 X1 made 101hp and 90fp torque. While my 2002 M2 makes 91hp and 85fp torque.
I cant find the reference to the heavier flywheel in the M2's again so thats not trustworthy. BUt the horsepower stats are all over. So my goal is to see if i can top those stats with my M2.
Rick mentioned 2004 XB heads, i thought the 2004's had cooling measures as that year ran hotter and im not certain about fitment. I mean if the differences are just cams and heads i should be able to put on 2002 XB heads and a better cam and be good to go.
As far as cams, what lift and duration?
The big bore kit could be cool. The question on that is, how much for a 50cc increase and is it worth it? Not knowing cost but it seems high for what you get.

Michael, I happen to be very biased, but I know a shop that can get you the power you're looking for, and it's semi-local to you (Berthoud). 2000 M2 has the same flywheel as the X1/S3 of the same vintage, lighter than Sportster flywheels and pressed together rather than bolted together. The only difference is the M2 has lower lift cams, different exhaust, and carbureted rather than fuel injected. Changing the cams alone to N4s would net the same power as the S1W motors. BTW, the numbers you post are crank-rated; RWHP figures are a bit lower in stock trim. The Thunderstorm heads you have are capable of the same power as worked XB heads if you have the port floors welded up, which our shop can do. Otherwise a worked set of Thunderstorm heads will make 3-5 HP less than a similarly worked set of 2003-2006 XB/2004-2006 XL1200 heads. 2007-up XB/1200 heads have lower intake port floors than the 04-06 XL1200 and 03-06 XB heads and thus perform similarly to equally worked Thunderstorms. A 1250 kit will be in order as well, as you will want higher compression pistons anyway, and there is about 5% power difference between 1200 and similar 1250s, and only about $150-200 difference in price as opposed to honing out the stock cylinders and prepping new, oversize rings, etc. To really take advantage of the headwork and high compression kit, and to make the most power, you will want high lift cams, of which the type you're looking for require clearancing the cam chest and possibly a hair off the lobe(S). This is relatively easily done or could be done by said shop.

BTW, said shop is NRHS V-Twin Performance, and I happen to work there : D.

2000 an up M2 exhaust differs only by the absence of an O2 port. 1999 had black painted stainless headers. Previous model M2's had mild steel headers instead of the stainless of the S1 and S3.
