OK,
SO this is my first Buell, A 1999 Cyclone with only a speedo, Never had the Tach,
Ive had bikes with broken speedos or broken Tachs and sporty cars with tachs and without,
I kinda see it this way,
When you're in a gear pulling hard and the engine starts to not pull real well, Its time to shift,
If one needs to look at a tach to know when to shift, Then one needs to drive an automatic,
I understand that a tach is valuable to set timing and look at timing advance curves, But over all an unneeded item, To me they are kinds like eye candy,
I drive a 93 Dodge cummins and the rage is to put a tach in them, Well when I put a 3200 RPM spring in the pump, She will pull to 3200 RPM and it will start to defuel at about 2800 RPM,
I also have a 92 Ford, 4 door dually with the 7.3 IDI engine,
It did come with a tach from the factory, The only thing that tach does it to remind me that I hate 411 gears on the highway,
How about you,
Tach or who cares?
Ive been driving bikes since about 1986 and I can tell you that I really never look at the speedo or tach when riding so I really don't see why I need either,
So why do so many need a tach and complain about the earlier ones without a tach?
OK,
Rant over.
Enjoy your ride,

Because it's fun to watch the needle move

I upgraded my '00 M2 to add the tach because I couldn't stand now knowing for sure if I was idling too low for the oil pump to work. It broke when I had stator/voltage regulator problem and now I can't stand not having a broken gauge in my dash. I'm looking for a replacement.

I don't need to it ride, I know when to shift.

Tach. is good for two things, ie: setting the IDLE and for RACING in getting your GEARING correct ...

For SHIFTING a SHIFT LITE is BETTER and SAFER !!!

Dang, as long as you can hear the engine or you just know the machine you really don't need one. Idle rarely changes and I do not race. Heck if you want or need one go for it, if not I like it more simple.

I don't need a tachometer. It is easy to tell when to shift and there is a rev limiter for extra protection.

Now a good oil pressure gauge would be nice.

An ammeter would be nice too but, in my case, the tachometer is not needed for this motor.

After adding 6th gear, I use the tach mainly as a gear indicator, using the Speed & rpm shown. Probably rather have the gear indicator light.
If you have any doubt, don't bother, they aren't needed and are heavy for the little value added.

Speedometer is only to make sure you are on the save side of your license!

I had a car which had every gauge installed,
Oil pressure, Oil temp, Amp, Volt, Tach, Cylinder head temp, ECT,,,,,,
Driving down the road all of a sudden the oil light went on, Caught my attention to look at oil pressure, Low pressure,
Shut down car after about 10 seconds,
A week later I needed to pull engine apart and install new crank bearings,
Lights and gauges and I still needed a rebuild,
If I were to design my own car or bike electrical, I think that after starting I would have warning buzzers instead of gauges and an auto shut down in case of high temp or low oil pressure,
To me gauges are tools and very little else,
Peter

The "BEST" money saving devices are AUTO SHUT SENSORS for OIL PRESSURE and TEMPERATURE, "PLUS" the REV LIMITER !!!

I put the Buell tach & speedo & a shift light, also have a Dyna 2000 ignition that looks like stock unit but has adjustable advance curve & rev limit. i limit it to 6,500 or 6,000
if i still only had speedo i would still want shift light & adjustable ignition

thanks Buellistic, i've been happy with it, the motor is still pulling strong at 6,000 so i know could easily rev too far when at track, 6,000 or less uses the Torque short shifting
love my set up & riding my Buell.
