for those of you that have not yet pulled your starter to either repair/replace the starter or replace the gasket...your'e in for a surprise! I recently pulled two starters during some spring maintenance and was surprised to find how badly both were leaking. probably a combination of leaking starter gasket and stator plug weeping...so fixed that as well with black RTV. The new gasket is far superior to the old one and I recommend if you are "in there" anyway, might as well take this extra step. Here is what I found on my 2002 S3T and exactly the same mess on my 98 S1W.

A good cleaning, new starter gasket and use black RTV on the stator plug and push it back in... Its been a few weeks and few miles and absolutely no leaks or weeping from either area now.

On my bikes I'm sure there's probably sockets and washers under the starter too lol. |
