Thank you all for the warm welcome! Yeah, what a sweet ride, eh? I am a mechanical engineer from Spain and living in Chicago for... wow 20 yr. lol. So yes, every year I went to Circuito de Jerez to see motoGP (or as 500/250/125cc). Here, I go to Indianapolis motoGP, camping by the track. Before I had a Suzuki Vstrom 650. Still have a Husqvarna 250 2-stroke... but this Buell is something else... I think about going left and the bike is already turning left... like wired to my brain. And the torque is an ON/OFF switch. Funny thing is that I was actually looking for a Cyclone... But did test ride the Thunderbolt and that was it. Gotta have it. It needs a bit of work; most important one is that the rear cylinder runs much much hotter than the front... up to the point the rear exhaust manifold almost glows... I will check for air leaks. The obvious first. I did put new plugs. The cooler upgrade recommended. And yes the old ones were both white cooked too hot. Interesting to see the plug threads were black... not tighten enough. A smaller annoyance is no speed shown in the gauge, trip odo is at zero, but the total mileage is shown... I can start the bike with kickstand down and in gear... so my guess is the kickstand switch is bypassed, and the speedo gets power from it... Does anybody have a wiring schematic for a 99 ST3? Thank you also for the invitation to homecoming... but end of May I will be traveling for business. Not possible, but Two Seasons please keep me posted. Buellish, maybe one day I ride down to GA... |

"A smaller annoyance is no speed shown in the gauge" That might be your speedo sensor. It's a common failure. There is an updated replacement part that fixes the problem. |

If I remember correctly, you have an injected bike, so you need to get yourself a copy of the ECMspy and a cable to allow you to modify the fuel maps. That aside, make sure the drive belt is adjusted very loose. Also, it's highly recommended to get a copy of the service manual and the parts book for the bike. Enjoy. |

You can get the field service and parts manuals from Al & Joanne at American Sport Bike. Jose, you have a PM I sent to you. You will receive it in your e-mail. You may or may not receive it because you are a new member. If you do not receive it, when you can use your Personal Messinger, send me one! |

Thank you again for the warm welcome and the tips!! I just wanted to give you all a quick update: After replacing plugs, I fixed some air leaks; The intake and the header pipe flanges were lose... just a bit more than finger tight. Carefully tightened them. Some of he rubber seals/ring in the air filter box were not properly seated. Also, added STP fuel injector cleaner to a tank of gas. The bike runs smoother, more evenly, and the rear cylinder exhaust pipe is no longer that hot that would make it quite uncomfortable. It is "just hot" now. The backfiring seems under control now. Engine is happier; Yep... air leaks, clogged injectors, lean, overheating. It makes sense. It is comforting to know that the bike responds quite well to a little maintenance. I will replace the fuel filter next; In second gear there is a bit of surging/backfiring. Thank you again. |

CONGRATS on the new bike!!... yeah, too bad about being so unfortunately inflicted with the disease though!! I've got 5 of the tubers and I'm silently on the look out for my next one every single day..... And yes...these bikes respond VERY well to a little maintenance. There is a list of things that should be done and then a list of things that I think ought to be done that really clean up all of the little things that can cause problems on these bikes and make them run great and hassle free. A lot of these bikes ended up in the wrong hands, people who wanted a Harley, but couldn't afford the price, or people that wanted a high speed high revving sport bike, both groups were disappointed with the purchase and ended up neglecting the bikes... A lot, NOT ALL, but a lot of HD shops hated the bikes because they took customers away from the cash cow product of the true Harleys, and the mechanics hated them cause they weren't "true Harleys" and pushed them off to the newbies in the shop to cut their teeth and knuckles on...Some shops were great though and deserve credit for being so. All in all these bikes have led a hard life until they fall into the hands of someone who truly rides to enjoy the machine and can appreciate it for what it is and will invest the time, energy and shop time to fix them and ride them. welcome to the madness!!!! - Buellish... yeah I'm stricken with the disease on multiple fronts...also a Guzzi guy, just picked up my third Italian lady, a nice 2002 V11 Lemans
