Honestly, I have no idea who did the riding, or if it were multiple riders. I throw the multiple riders theory out there because the original version of this video showed the S1 do a monster wheelie - which could've been where the image on the S1 wheelie shirt came from. Court has alluded to Howard Kelly doing the wheelie on the S1 for the shirt. Along the same lines, were it not publicized that the rider in the Have a Nice Day! video was Tripp Nobles, former employees, etc. might not have known that trivia tidbit. Maybe there are credits at the end of the VHS copy I have at home? But then again, probably not...as it was mainly used as a sales tool with the video playing in loop mode at dealerships. You don't have to be a mechanic to "ride an S2". You do, however have to be a mechanic to "own an S2". | ||

You can own an S2, but unless you are a mechanic, or can afford to pay one, you will not do much riding. They are 25 year old machines that need attention. And if you want to really find any problems, you need to take a 4000 mile ride. You don't have to be a great mechanic, but you do need deduction and problem solving skills. | ||

Really? I bought my S2 used about...2006? Ran great, but I tore it down and put on a Thunderstorm top end and cams for more power. That was...07, I think. Since then, I've pretty much...put fuel in it, and ridden it. Oh. I did have to replace the voltage regulator one time. And a speedo cable. If you do proper maintenance...you don't have to "be a mechanic" - maintenance tends to prevent failures, when done correctly. | ||

Really. Doing proper maintenance is being a mechanic. And by learning to do proper maintenance you hopefully become a good enough mechanic so that when you are in the middle of South Dakota you can rebuild your master cylinder in a Motel Six parking lot. Or when your ride starts dying in Minnesota you can source replacement breakers at O'Reillys that will keep you traveling. Or when bad pavement cracks your front header in Wisconsin you can get it off and to a welder. Or when your front fork seals start leaking in Arkansas you can clean them well enough with a thin strip of plastic so that you can ride 3000 miles back home. Or when your charging system craps out in California you can troubleshoot the system and find you can keep going by disconnecting your lights and charging the battery every night. Or even when an ace mechanic with a head rebuilding business has to spend his time in a Colorado motel lot trying to get his oil lines to stop leaking. These are just some examples of things that have happened to those of us who have been riding to the S2 gatherings. There are many more examples. My point is, if something can break or wear out it doesn't matter how clean your garage is, on a long trip sh*t happens. And if you have your tools with you and know how to use them you have a chance of finishing the trip on two wheels. If you have to call a tow truck and look for a mechanic when things go wrong, then stay close to home. | ||

Guaranteed rocker box leaks at 4000 (rear) and 8000 (front) miles were also a nice way to thin the herd of posers. Things kinda went downhill when the XB platform came out and made it so easy for any chucklehead to ride a Buell.  | ||

Those still often have base gasket leaks and lifters getting loud at 40-50k. Compared to tubers they're a dream...aside from spark plugs being a minor inconvenience. An early Cycle World review called them "kit bike like" or something to that effect. That is both what I love and hate about them. |
