Hi! Rebuilding a 98 S1W with 13K miles. Pulled the intake manifold and noticed a lot of carbon buildup on the valves.Should I be concerned? Since I'm doing the fuel system, I pulled the petcock. No filter going up into the tank, just a small tube. Is this normal? Thanks! |

On the carbon, yes be concerned. Excessive carbon can raise the compression and result in detonation. If your bike is like mine, the carbon is a result of leaking valve guide seals. |

Thanks for the reply. My short term goal is to get it running, see how it does before any major tear down. Since the petcock is missing the long "filter", I think the previous owner stuck the tube in the "ON" passage so he'd know when to go to "Reserve". |

If you pulled the intake manifold only, you are likely seeing carbon and sludge deposits from bad gas. The exhaust and combustion chamber may or may not look similar, though they likely do if the intake valves looks bad. I would do a compression test or go ahead and pull the heads. If the compression test comes out good, probably not bhuge deal, just try to find better gas. |

I would pull the heads too just to verify |

Compression test would be the least invasive. If your compression is within spec, I'd let it ride. If it's low or high, then I'd worry. I can't wait to see what carbony goodness lives inside my jugs. We'll know after this weekend. |

A proper head rebuild and light porting is not insanely expensive either. Given it is never necessary to adjust valves, having the heads rebuilt every 30,000 miles isn't a bad idea (especially since many bikes would then likely only get one rebuild in their lifetime... a Buell can easily go 60,000 miles, but most bikes won't see that many miles before they rot or something else happens to them). |

OLD SCHOOL: Little water injection to burn carbon ... STP gas treatment every 5K Miles ... Enjoy the Ride !!! |

If you have the carbon fibre race air filter kit on, riding in the rain will probably get water in air filter that will let a fine spray of water in |

Right on Lakes, let nature do the water injection ... |

Do your head breathers vent into the carb or do you have a catch can? |

OLD SCHOOL: One of the many things that "i" did to my BUELL when "i" first got it was to run the head breathers to into a catch container ... Anybody ever wondered why the intake valve guides have oil seals on them and then the head breathers are the run to the air cleaner back plate other than because of the EPA ??? |

The PO had run a line from the breather bolts to under the bike, but no filter on the end. I just put one on. Running Forcewinder intake with the dirtiest K&N filter you've ever seen! Like I said previously, I think I'll see how it runs before doing anything major. I don't have to buy it if I don't like it, and I enjoy working on it. If I do buy it, it's so cheap I can't loose! |
