I'm trying to install a Vance & Hines SS2R on my '02 S3.I'm not familiar with installation on the 2.5" system with the 90 degree bend. The first problem I've run into is when I get the muffler up on the collector,I can't tell where the front hanger bracket on the muffler goes, outside the Y hanger or inside the hanger? The second problem is the muffler looks tweaked as if the trailing edge is angled hard to the inside.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Mike |

I build mine so it sits inside, I have an aluminum block for a spacer. I know it's not what you currently have, but it should give you an idea of what it should look like.

I have a V&H on my X1, same/same ... Can post photos for you if needed..... I'd like to get rid of it and buy a drummer....it's not tweaked..... |

LOL! you're working too hard. I just cut a section of steel tubing the correct length for my front mount spacer. It only looked like crap until it was encased in a protective layer of road grime. |

Here is the carbon one on my S1W. I had to work with it a little.

Jeff,I've got the front bracket inside the Y hanger just like in your picture but the muffler is on an angle toward the shock. So much so that the rear mounts are around two inches off. |

Thats strange. THe angle of the pipe looked the same as the one in the pic above. I never mounted it so.. Is the bracket maybe tweaked? It may need to be taken off and rewelded to change the angle. I cant see the pipe angle being differant from Vance & Hines on the same slip on. Both are 2.5" |

REMOVE THE REAR Z BRACKET! I see so many people install a V&H but leave the stock rear Z on the bike. It needs to be removed to be installed flush and properly.

I beleive there was a difference in the mufflers for the early and late 2 1/2" headers, and this sounds like what I heard before. |

...or save all the hassle because the "muffler" will probably self-destruct in about 5000 miles anyway...that is, if you don't yank it before then because the HUGE flat spot in the midrange pisses you off... |

when my front isolator went, the mounting on the VH exhaust ripped apart, I would watch the front isolator and the upgrade to American Sport Bike front mounting bracket if you haven't already. |

I finally got over what was keeping me out of the shop and went out and had another go at the Vance & Hines installation.Well it went about like it did before, the muffler is canted to the point that it's running into the shock at the rear. It's hard to see in the first two images but the mount is 1 1/2" off. Before anyone brings up the Z bracket,I'm trial fitting the muffler.I've run V&H's on S2's before and know about the bracket.

Is this a new V&H or a used one? Was it ever repacked yet? Could have got messed up somehow? Although the front mount is probably supposed to go in between the Y mount arms, seems like it wouldn't make much difference to put it outboard of the front hangar. But if the back end is the problem, wouldn't it have to be a twisted elbow, or the elbow isn't mounted quite square to the muffler body? There's only 3 points involved, right? Header attachment, front mount, rear mount... best two out of three, what doesn't match up? Could be a bent header pipe? (Message edited by jayvee on December 02, 2014) |

If it was a bent header pipe, the stock muffler wouldn't go on correctly. |

There are different part number mufflers for the early and late 2 1/2" headers. The elbows are slightly different. The pic of the muffler with the polished 90 is from a 98 S3, the black one is from a 99 M2. Both slightly different. Photo coming shortly technical difficulties. |

Lets try again
So I would assume you may have an early style 2 1/2 header muffler. (Message edited by Blks1l on December 02, 2014) |

I had this same problem a while back. There are 2 different part numbers as BlkS1 said. I tried to post a pic but I'm challenged that way... I'll give it another shot when I get home tomorrow night. But I know what you mean about the muffler pointing toward the rear shock. I think you gotta get the right muffler unfortunately. |

I think that has to be my problem,I've got the version with the bend tighter than 90 degrees. My stock muffler goes on the stock header with the correct alignment. |

Compare the necks between the stock and your V&H and you should see the difference. |

Why not cut it half way or almost through, put it on and bent it at the right angle and weld it?! |
