I found a 1999 X1 that has been sitting since 2000.
It has 2100 miles on the clock and a has some mods, V&H muffler, with some kind of rear sets (anyone know what brand?)low bars and carbon fiber.
A new fuel pump was needed to get it running and everything seems fine.
My question is really about this shock, I know there were recalls but it works fine, is it dangerous to ride with this shock, did they actually come apart or was it just about leaking?

Nice find. Crossroad for the rear seats(I think) same as your handlebar mod. From what I've read there's no real world example of the shock breaking, only like you state, leaking. harley may still do the swap for free. Depending on how much they charge if they aren't free it can be pretty expensive to replace and may be worth looking into works or other alternative...
That think has some nice trinkets on it.

Guessing the rearsets are Buell Pro Series aka Crossroads. Same with the bars.

I don't believe the shocks "came apart". But they were known to leak. I'd ride it hard and keep on eye out for leaks!!!

Hard to tell in the photo but your under seat tail cover with flush mount turn signals looks like a eurocomponents part.

Lentuk- It's definitely worth checking about the shock with a Buell dealer if you have one nearby. I bought a salvage 2000 S3 back in ~2005 and my local dealer replaced my rear shock under the recall, no questions asked. Admittedly it's ~9 years later now, but if you can get a free shock for the asking it's worth doing.

There are no "Buell dealer". Call Harley-Davidson Customer Service at 1 (800) 258-2464.

Get the straight scoop and get the shock replaced if you can. You have nothing to gain from keeping the one that is on there and having ANY (leaking or structural) concerns.

They will be thrilled to help you.

Court- Buell.com still directs customers to contact "Authorized Buell Service Providers" for warranty and service work and there's still a page to find the nearest "service provider" to you.

I'm guessing as things are winding down as far as Buell support you're saying it'd be simpler to just go straight to HD?

It is. Heck, at 2k miles, the rocker boxes probably haven't even started leaking yet!

LentUK, order a pair of rocker box gasket kits soon. Front will go at about 5k miles, rear will go at about 9k miles.

Its an important tuber bonding ritual between you and the bike. Embrace it and enjoy it. : )

Nice find.

LOL. Might as well do the oil pump drive gear too while you've got the rocker covers off.

Which reminds me- GREAT tuber information site: http://thex1files.com/

One of my best friends paints airplanes for a living, he's very good at masking, he painted everything on the bike.

There are no Buell dealers.

That language is:

quote:

Every new Buell Motorcycle comes with a Harley-Davidson, Inc. backed 24-month / unlimited miles limited warranty. Harley- Davidson, Inc. has a continued commitment to supplying replacement parts and services at over 250 authorized Buell® service locations. Giving you the confidence your motorcycle will be kept in top performance

Then you click on "Find an Authorized Service Provider" and gain access to a list of about every Harley-Davidson dealer in the world.

Waste as much time as you please . . . if you are in a hurry, or just want to simply get the problem solved . .. Call Harley-Davidson Customer Service at 1 (800) 258-2464.

That is the best looking M2 I have ever seen. Gorgeous. Excellent. About the only thing that would make it better would be if I were sitting, looking at it from my own milk crate…

"everything was polished" you're probably out of elbow grease! ; )

I got her out on the highway today, clip-ons and rear sets are not for me.
I'm going to put it back to stock.
Factory Buell carbon fiber and Crossroads stuff will be up for sale or trade.
I need an updated shifter, a shock and a comfortable seat.

Looks like mine which I bought just a few years ago with only 670 miles on it. I would have to look, but I don't think it even has 2000 miles on it yet. I need to get the stripes on the front fender!

Enjoy the "new' bike!

I just got this recall service done at my local HD dealer on 11/03/2014. It would have been $1,400 on the repair bill, but 100% free because of recall. Also recall parts get shipped next day usually, so my bike was done on the 3rd day.

There are still authorized buell service center. I am service manager at one of them. Contact a local dealer with vin number they will fix you up. Awesome find I just bought one similar. Was a 1 owner 2001 model all original orange and blue model. Love these X1 bikes.
