Ok, so I've had my '98 Cyclone for about 9 months and it had quite a few issues when I got it. I've worked through most of them and now have a good running bike, but am curious of a few things. 1. The stock CV carb had some issues- it would foul up and die, stick open and leak fuel and generally be completely unreliable. Half the time I took the bike out I would end up pushing it back home. Several Harley mechanics and myself went through it and could not find the issue, so I eventually grew tired of the headache and bought a used Mikuni HSR 42 for $200. That made all the difference. I was hoping a correctly running carb would greatly improve gas mileage, but I'm only getting around 33 average (I mainly am in city traffic, not on highways). Is this decent or should I be getting better mileage? 2. When I took the carb off I also put on new manifold gaskets and noticed quite a bit of carbon build up in the pots. What is the best method/product to clear all that crap out of the system safe for use with our fiberglass gas tanks? | ||

If you're near sea level and mostly in town, that's about te correct mileage for a Mikuni. They get about 5 mpg or so less than CVs, particularly dependent on how much throttle you use. In Amarillo, I only got about 35 mpg in town and 39 highway. Now in Longmont I get anywhere from 38-50 mpg depending on throttle and route. | ||

Do you meant "ports" ? Maybe SeaFoam ? | ||

Well, yes ports, but I assume if carbon is built up there, it has built up in other places too that I can't see. Is SeaFoam safe for use with fiberglass tanks? | ||

Is your Mik's accelerator pump adjustable? Perhaps it blasts in more than you actually need. I noticed my fuel economy went down from 45 to 35 when I swapped my ironhead's carb with a Bendix. It ran nicely and pulled strong so I chalked it up to crude carb. Then I went for a ride with a slow friend on a long trip in the country and came back with over 50MPG. Turns out, it felt really good when I beat on it so I beat on it  | ||

Tanks are a kind of plastic, not really fiberglass. I get poor mileage too, maybe 38-40, but I tend to consider speed "limit" signs as more of "suggestions". And I'm still tinkering with my carb, plan to shim the needle next... |
