Have any of you guys seen an oil tank crack from the system being over serviced? I just got my bike on the road, got about 20 miles on it and luckily just got to my parents shop and found oil all over the back fender oil tank area. I found the tank was over serviced, my fault but I wouldn't have expected that. I was just going to change the oil and look for the leak after I got the oil change completed. I saw a leak I thought was the drain plug, and I found the tank cracked at a forward inner vertical seam. I checked the vent line and it is clear. I will get this repaired, but did also get a replacement/spare coming. |

I was never blessed with an S2, but I think the cracks have happened before, and I don't think they are related to over servicing. |

Pardon my ignorance...what is 'overserviced'? Overfilled? |

The oil tank in my last S2 developed a crack in the same area around 30,000 miles. I couldn't find an aluminum welder and needed the bike for commute so I took the tank off, cleaned it up, roughed the cracked area and epoxy'ed it with JB Weld. Never had an issue afterward. If your vent line is clear, overfilling won't make a lick of difference. It blows out the vent, and out the head breathers. Out of idle curiosity (and having a non-leaking S2)...measure the distance between your frame tube tank mount points, and measure the distance between the mounting tabs on the tank. Wonder if there's a "squeeze/pull" action going on, unrelated to oil levels... |

I realize that the vent does out of the head breathers, but I have read about peoples caps blowing out from their oil levels being too high, I don't know if there were other issues as well with them. I don't have the bike in front of me now to look at how close the seat is to the oil cap. |

My X1 blew the cap right off the tank, wow what a mess...... then I learned quickly how to properly fill the oil tank....sure learned that one the hard way, right after buying the bike new in 99, but it definitely blew the cap off the tank. |

Was your tank breather hose plugged? My M2 was stored for a number of years while I figured out "keep it, or not". Once I got it set up the way I wanted it, I started riding it again...and it would blow a TON of spooge out the head breather hoses. Turns out, my tank breather was plugged solid. I pulled the hose off, hooked it to air...and SOMEthing went flying across the shop. No idea what it was, never did find it, but I zip tied a piece of cloth over the end as a 'filter', and I've never had another drip out of the head breathers. Vents...need to vent. |
