Just a FYI: M2, I had heard some clunking and then my battery died. I took that magneto off and the head of the bolts that hold the gear on where gone and stuck between the magnets of the magneto. I since got a magneto with 8 bolts off of a sportster and replaced the stator. I read where it was somewhat common for the buells to break the holds on the mag, and that is why HD upgraded the design to have 8 bolts. If your easy on the bike, this probably will not happen, however if your hard on it like, you might want to upgrade to the 8 bolt mag ahead time. |

Not a magneto, it's a generator with a stator and rotor... Sorry, just being accurate for someone that reads this sometime down the road. |

This is a good example of why one should not only have a FSM, but also a PARTS BOOK so one can call a PART by the CORRECT NAME and we are all on the same PAGE !!! ie: STATOR PN 29967-89A or ROTOR PN 32403-89A up to all Models to 1999 ... (Message edited by buellistic on July 19, 2014) |

Theoretically Mhlunsford is sort of correct. The charging system does use an AC generator same as the rotor and coil of a magneto. I am surprised anyone would draw that conclusion. |

AC with a voltage regulator to float battery and the other a DC voltage to fire the spark plug/plugs ... "BUT" "i" have never heard of one unit doing both ... "BUT" with a generator and the correct voltage regulator a battery is not needed with the generator to run the lights(must run engine with a magneto) ...
