So, the last two times I started my S2, it has just randomly shut off and the lights have shut off and then back on. I can then hear a circuit breaker clicking. Once the lights come back on, she'll fire right up.

Where do I start?

Although I found that most S2 electrical issues were either under the dash or under the tailsection, the breakers do fatigue with age and sometimes without warning are no longer able to carry much load.

I would start with the easiest solutions first. Make sure the battery terminals are tight. Check battery voltage.

Next, make sure the fuse isn't "soft blown" and plugged in well.

From there, it would be a relay to check next, I think.

Have been thinking it might be a low battery, so I'll put a fresh charge on it and see. I checked the battery connections already.

Thanx!

I'm with Screamer,
the breaker is a standard Harley item, and they are prone to failure.
They are inexpensive, just go ahead and replace them all...

You can get the breakers at NAPA. It is one 30amp and three 15 amp breakers.

Well, I connected a charger this afternoon, and it immediately read charged. I let it charge for an hour or so anyway. Didn't have time to ride it, so don't know if that made a difference.

I will probs go ahead and change the circuit breakers. Thanx for the links for NAPA. Have a store just a couple miles from home.

Ask Shane about bad breakers. We changed all 4 of them when the S2 crew came through on the way to Christmas in Michigan a couple of years ago.
All 4 were a mess inside VERY corroded. They are not sealed and moisture makes it way inside quite easily. A trip to Napa and other places (no one had all the correct ones) and all was well.
We did have to cut the mounting tabs off the new breakers, they didn't have any in stock without them.

I too had the same problem on my 95 S2. If memory serves, FiremanJim keeps/kept a spare on the bike all the time.

Yup, Brad is correct, they can do really odd things when they start to go-- like run bike at half rpm on tach and on one cyl. And the ignition switches are notorious for odd electrical gremlins as well.
And all S-2 owners should carry a spare timing cup-- they are cheap and I went through 3 on 2 different S-2's.

OK, I changed all circuit breakers, cleaned the connectors w/contact cleaner and generous dielectric grease. Quite a job, but seemed successful.

Went out for a ride and about 45 min in, she died and left me stranded on the side of the road in 98 degree heat! DAYUM! I was at least able to coast to a very small patch of shade provided by a small tree. After about 15 min, it did fire back up and I was able to pull into a parking lot in the shade where I had room to go to work on it.

This time I didn't hear any clicking, but I could move the positive battery cable at the battery. So I pulled the bodywork off so I could get to the post and tightened it as much as possible. It was not what I would call loose, but I could move the cable with a goodly amount of force, so I tightened it just to make sure.

Didn't cut off on the ride back home, so I'm at a loss as to why it's shutting off.

Weird that I'm chasing the same issue on my 99 S3; random shut downs that seem to happen when the heat gets up, I ride slow or a long distance. On my S2 yesterday, I had just ridden through a park 10-15 mph for about 10 min. When I shifted to 2nd accelerating back on the hwy, it died. After sitting for 15 min, it started back up.

Where do I look next?

My buddy has a 94 FXR and it was having electrical gremlins that would completely shut the bike down, then reset and it would run fine, then momentarily shut down everything electrical, then fire back up. turned out that he had a 15amp breaker in a 30 amp slot (ignition) that couldn't carry the load. it would fire right up when cold, then heat up in about 5 to 10 minutes and it couldn't carry the load, then cool down and run till it heated back up.

I'm sure you have had all kinds of excellent advice and yours could be more complicated but in the case of my buddies bike....it was a breaker...

How do I test the coil?

im sure there is a way to test the coil, but on the coil itself is a stamp date in white...mine was the orignal, as it was from 1994, i picked up a new one from h.d.(55 bucks i think)=== dated 2014...and have put a couple hundred miles, in the heat...and mine is good to go.

So, I went out for a brief ride this afternoon. Its really cool for August in Augusta; since when is it 75 degrees on Augusta 2nd here. Figured if the issue were heat related, then I wouldn't have an issue with the bike shutting down.

I usually ride with the high beam on and noticed the low beam was on. I was about 20 min into the ride and hit the high beam and the bike immediately cut off. Pulled to the side of the road, switched to low beam and fired right up.

Any suggestions? Obviously, the hi beam is causing an ignition problem. Could it be a short thats just on the hi beam side of the circuit?
