I bought Byrdock's green S3T back in March. It ran a little different than my X1, but I figured it was probably just an intake seal refresh and some ECMSpy away from being right. So, I started looking into the sensors to see what might need to be replaced, and I found that there is no Engine Temperature Sensor on the rear head by the spark plug. There's not even a hole where one would go. This leads me to believe that the installed heads didn't start life as a Buell DDFI Thunderstorm. Does anybody know some history on this bike? What year is the bike? Early (pre injection) bikes didn't have the rear cylinder sensor and it was only fitted as a 'recall/service task' later. Some people didn't bother getting it done so you may have one of those. My 98 S3 didn't have one but my 2000 S3 did. |

My 2000 X1 had the rear temp sensor fitted when it was a few months old as part of a recall. |

I've never disconnected the sensor in my 2000 X1 with the bike running but I'm surprised to hear that the bike even runs without one. |

Could possibly be a late model 2000 when they switched the CHT location, if so the sender will be down the chimney so to speak. Lift the rear of the fuel tank and have a look for the wire going down the center of the rocker box. |

Unless the rear head was replaced with a non- fuel injected head it should have a temp sensor. Early DDFI location for the temp sensor was outboard, in the fin pack by the spark plug - where it's visible. The temp sensor location was later moved to the "chimney" location in the center of the head to improve accuracy of the ETS signal and response time. It may be difficult to see unless you lift the fuel tank and look at the center of the rear rocker box cover. |

Hey Tim, you didn't get screwed. Even if you have non thunderstorm heads, the extras on that bike pull up its value. Like the other guys said, you probably have a chimney. Btw I'm the guy who got cold feet and missed out on your bike. She's a beaut! |

Hey guys, big thanks for all the replies. I'm getting to the point where I know just enough about these bikes to be dangerous (and freak out when something doesn't look like I think it should). I was unaware of the chimney location, it wasn't like that on my '99 X1 or in the 2000 S3T service manual. I'll check it out, I'm sure it's there. |

@Thunder x1, you took that one a bit personally. Kalali is a very helpful guy, and was not impressing anything upon you- He was merely making a statement confirming what you did was right a. Saw something amiss b. Asked questions c. Got information d. High fives all around Your response to him is pretty standoffish. No one knows how old you are btw. Now you've got me thinking - my memory is a bit shady. I do remember the bike being called back to the dealer after some hot running issues in traffic. They either fitted or relocated a temp sensor on the rear head.......... I think! |

Buell Product Program 6 ( bulletin B-029Int) moved the temp sensor location on certain X1and S3 models for some HDI markets. On certain carb models it added a temp sensor. S2s were not involved and the U.S. Canada and Japan market configured motorcycles were not involved. |
