So, after my first ride on my Millenium buell, I had a problem with oil leaking out of the transmission vent line. Crank seal must be blown, right? Maybe wrong! I pulled the derby cover off, and found that the trans fluid level was actually slightly low!. It appears that doing long balance point wheelies may introduce the oil in the primary to an angle which allows leakage out to the vent hose, which is angled to drain out. What I think I am going to do is angle the drain hose up, with a filter on the end.... hopefully that will let me know what is really going on. Well, I'll also have to NOT do some wheelies for a while. That is going to be a challenge. That being all said and done, what are the chances my flywheel seal will fit a 1991 Westwind? It's been sitting so long, and has the outdated chain tensioner anyways, it would make sense to change them both out. I looked around a bit, it appears it would fit. What do you think? |

Better to jump the gun than jump the shark. I think you need to refer to the parts book for a 1991 XL, and see if it is the same part number. Westwind motor is just a sportster. |

Route the line to the front of the bike. Like the stunt riders do. |

@Lynrd. Will do..... I just need to find an online source for that one. Good thinking charlie! That'll do the trick, I think. My stuntbikes were all suzuki/kawi, so I never had to deal with that. My problems were sump retention, PAIR valve, and secondary injector/flapper valve problems. Matt |

No more than 28 ounces of primary fluid. Manual is wrong, 28 is correct amount. You'd know if the oil seal is blown, you'd get more oil out of primary than you've ever seen before! |

@ Two seasons, I figured as much lolz. I had a 12 quart pan underneath, expecting a flood of fluid..... nope. I'm so glad I get good news once in a while. |

Matt, Wheelies are very hard on the weak (porous casting) front motor mount. Hopefully you know how to put it down gently, even so, if you insist on that sort of hooliganism (torque monster bikes seem to cry out for that sort of thing) you really ought to upgrade your front mount to a cnc'd from billet type of part. Congrats on the new bike, sounds like you are already having a lot of fun with it. |

While the billet mount will survive wheelies indefinitely, the bolts will not. If you're still running the original Thunderstorm heads, they have a bad habit of breaking on one side. The XB/04 later XL1200 heads are structurally stronger, have superior spring/valve/port profiles, and make a bit more power. I used to have a few railroad track crossings on my commute and had some good wheelie/jump spots. These days my commute is rather boring save for the occasional errant driver. My fork/shock seals tend to last much longer... |

I am a former stunt rider, so most of my wheelies come down like a feather. I'm trying to break myself from doing them, but it's tough. One update: pretty sure the crank seal is still at fault. Even after re routing, on a long wheelie 1/4 mile @40mph, 2nd gear, my bike got bathed in sport trans, covering the rear tire and brake. I figured this out on the next left hander .... I slid like Rossi. I'm sure it looked cool, but it was less than fun. When I got home, I let the bike idle, and inspected. There is a very small tuft coming from the trans vent. My theory is that the crank gases are coming through and pressurizing the primary. Not a big deal, until the vent tube is submerged.... Then again, just a theory. Regardless, I will be installing a new seal and a catch can this weekend. |

When Craig Jones was stuning a Buell he had to route the gearbox breather hose so that it exited at the headstock of the bike, otherwise he lost oil out of the breathers just like you have |

ahhh. Yeah, I only routed it up in a loop above the battery. It made a HUGE mess. Gotta stop by hardley to pick up some sport trans. Craig Jones held the stoppie world record for damn near 10 years on an xb. I loved his X1. It was raunchy. |
