so the bike has been sitting for a few years, and so i had to go through the carb. Bike ran like a raped ape before parked. after putting the carb back together i didnt pay attention to where my needle was set... so instead of trial and error tuning, i thought i might make life easier on myself and get some advice. Its been about 3 years since ive tuned a carb, and while some of its coming back to me, not everything is still 'up there' in that brain of mine anymore.... ok so higher the needle the earlier the main jet kicks in, the lower the needle the later the main jet kicks in...? sound right? ok well here is the issue im having, and i hope its carb related and not compression related. When i get on the throttle the bike is pretty snappy, and then tends to loose power and torque in the mid-top range. Another thing to note, the bike seems to be more responsive with the choke pulled. pulling the choke adds more air right? so perhaps im too rich? which doesnt make sense because the thing ran tits with the current jetting back in the day. unless its compression related? also im getting ALOT of popping from the exhaust when decelerating in gear or engine braking. I dont remember the bike behaving this way before i parked it. So the popping, iirc is an over rich issue? Or is it somehow my timing has gone off from sitting? unlikely i think. Also forgot to mention i lubed the cyl's with some oil, and ran the starter for a good 20sec with the spark plugs removed. just in case there was any rust in the cycl's or if the rings were really dry. I then replaced the plugs with brand new irridium plugs it also has new premium gas any idea whats up with this thing? (Message edited by the4ork on June 28, 2014) |

Pulling the choke cuts down on air. Pull your plugs, clean, reinstall, ride about 20 min and check them. If they are white, you're lean somehow (maybe intake seals?). If they are black, you're rich (not in the good way lol). |

i put new intake seals in... but the stupid carb stay bracket pulls the carb about 1/8" out of the manifold... i think the xb heads are to blame. never been an issue tho. but perhaps im using a different brand of manifold seal? |

That other fitting..is it on the manifold? If so, it is the vacumn port for the VOES switch. Don't cap it, connect it.... |

What is a voes switch? Im guessing its the one connected behind the butterfly on the top of the carb. Just dont know what its function is. But no its behind the fuel inlet nipple. Does it cause the carb to function improperly if uncapped? |

The VOES changes the spark advance depending on the manifold pressure it senses. |

On all the CVs I've had the plug directly behind the inlet, still on the side of the carb, was plugged. |

My voes is connected. weather it works or not who knows. But what is that 3rd nipple, and does it require capping? |

California bike, right? Is the EVAP canister still there? Doesn't it (the EVAP canister) run a hose to someplace that would need capping, if the EVAP canister somehow fell off and got lost? |

I am also in california, and neither of my bikes have evap canisters. But I do seem to have a few on a shelf in my garage. |

I checked my service manual (page 4-14) the EVAP canister hose inlet (nipple) is directly behind the fuel inlet elbow. I should be capped if no canister hose is present. |
