Any tips on separating the outer tube from the slide tube? The left fork went smoothly, just a bit of "slide hammer" action needed to pop the oil seal, and bushings clear of the outer tube. Now on the right tube, I've removed all the internals, slid down the dust seal and removed the oil seal's stopper ring. I've given a lot of slide hammer force and the tubes will not separate. I'm afraid I'm going to break something or scar up the tubes. Any advice would be appreciated. |

I've never rebuilt a set of X1 forks but when dissembling them on my dirtbike I had the same problem. Try a heat gun on the outer larger diameter tube (so only it heats up) and then use the slide hammer action again. Worked for me Note. When reassembling dont use this heat gun method to install the fork seal as it can cause the fork seal to tear. A proper fork seal hammer and rubber grease can make the job a lot easier. Hope this helps |

The heat made the difference! The tubes are separated. In my haste, I didn't take note of which way the seal spacer was oriented. One side is more rounded, the other side has a sharper edge. Does anyone know which side goes against the oil seal? Maybe it doesn't matter. The FSM doesn't say. |
