Talk about bad luck...  This is the Motodynamic tail light from a forum group buy last yr. Ran errands yesterday and as I approached the bike from the rear, I noticed the tail light was askew. Do not know how long I rode that way, probably at least one day and probably vibration caused. So I thought 'No big deal'. I ordered another from Motodynamic and pulled out a spare, also an integrated stop/turn version, just not as nice as the Motodynamic's. I ran to Home Depot and bought some neoprene, flat, and lock washers. Thought may be I could experiment on isolating the vibration.  Once I turned the nut to secure the first bolt, everything seems to be fine, as in getting tighter and tighter. Then all of a sudden, the nut rotated with ease. Effectively, I extracted the bolt from the plastic housing. Now am out two tail lights. This sucks because now is the time when the weather is nice and I can cut my weekly fuel cost in half just going to work. Wondering if anyone else had similar or same broken tail light problem. Don't over tighten the bolts. Use MODERATE torque, and a nylock lock nut, and it won't go anywhere. | ||

Now I want a Uly taillight too. that looks great !! BTW I heard that nasty 'snap' the last time I put my taillight on over my new license mount. Thankfully it still works. I have a spare for 'when that day comes' | ||

I would 5-minute epoxy that bolt back in and go ride. Nobody will see it. Take Rat's advice upon re-installation. | ||

The new tail light will be in the mail Wed. Do not know if the neoprene washers will isolate any vibration or not, but I guess it would not hurt to try anyway. As for the broken spare, I will epoxy that bolt back in and epoxy the other bolt as well. Any brand recommend ? Roderick | ||

JB Weld. Fixes tractor axles and transmission housings (It says so right on the package) | ||

The first one probably cannot be glued and expected to hold but I would try that on the second one. I would go to local hobby shop and buy small bottle of 5-minute epoxy. See how the pulled out bolt comes out of a well. Fill well with epoxy and place bolt back in. Slide a thin washer over the bolt and use the extra surface area to bond with epoxy to the plastic case. Glue washer over other bolt to keep even. JB weld may work fine, I dont know. It's made for metal on metal, not sure about plastic. The key is surface area, that is why I don't think the first one will hold. | ||

I would just buy a new Uly tailight for $30 like Spiderman did and replace it with that. | ||

Installed the new tail light with a pair of grommets and used it with nylon lock nuts. And am definitely going to repair the spare tail light with Jim's advice. Roderick | ||

The new light lasted about one yr.  Top is the new light today. Bottom is the light I installed one yr ago. It must be the vibration.  This time, I installed the license plate holder behind the tail light. Not sure if that will help or not. I have rubber grommets inside rubber grommets to control vibrations. Maybe the license plate holder should be behind the light bracket. Surely there must be at least one mechanical engineer here. Roderick |
