It appears that Veronica has developed a bad handlebar starter switch. Checking it with continuity tester shows the switch never seems to close....actually, it seems to close about one time in 30 or so operations, which is no better as far as I am concerned. I sort of nuked it with contact cleaner and operated it for 50 or so cycles, hoping the condition would clear. It hasn't. Thoughts on repair/replacement? | ||

Based on the block diagram in my S3 service manual, it's just a simple SPST switch designed to handle only .1A I guess you can go the expensive way and replace the entire throttle switch assembly..there's one on Ebay at $69.95 buy it now.. or go the cheap route and just add a switch.. Sorry, i should remember that not everyone keeps track of my bikes by name - this is for Veronica, a 1998 S3. If it was for either of the S2s, it frankly would be easier - but those both work just fine | ||

I had the same thing happen on my X1 after I'd just bought it secondhand, on occasions it just wouldn't start. After much testing of the various components and connections it turned out that the start switch conical spring had been mashed and didn't have enough 'spring' left in it. Being downunder it wasn't too easy to get hold of a Buell switch block so I ended up replacing it with a similar conical shaped spring sourced from a small radio that I had that used either AA or AAA batteries. It's still working perfectly 15,000km later. Cost of fix $nil, outcome good as new. | ||

99 X1 switch should work, although I cannot speak for the end plug - you should be able to pull the pins out and swap them into the older plug if it's different. |
