Are the clips needed? The stock pads look to have clips, but the American Sport Bike replacements don't appear to (from the photos).

Good question!

Unfortunately I don't know the answer. Every set of rear pads that I've used on my S2 have had the clips. On the inner pad, the clip secures the pad to the backside of the caliper. On the outer pad, the clip mates on the inside of the piston. I presume the clips secure the pads in order to stop rattling (or other noise), but as I said I don't know for sure as every set of rear pads that I've used on my S2 have had clips. Maybe Al - or others with firsthand experience with the American Sport Bike S2 rear pads - will chime in? Or perhaps, since there are 3 'flavors' of rear pads listed on American Sport Bike's website, one of the 'flavors' actually has the clips.

This just goes to show that after nearly 19 years with a bike one can still learn new things about it,

I'm trying to remember as well, but I believe I used a set without clips on my last bike. Just been too long lol. Oh well. I ordered a set without, so we'll find out soon enough! Haha

Right on Tom!
Seriously, the last couple of set I put on our bikes didn't have clips.

The purpose of the clips might be to prevent squealing.

That would be my bet.
On the same topic, the front pads on my S2 rattled to the point of distraction.
I think it was Essmjay (Shane) that showed me the way, might have been Frank though now that I think about it..... He had some small springs pushing out on the pads, they were slid on the 2 pad retaining pins. Problem solved.
I got them at the hardware store for less than a buck each. They are strong enough to put a little bit of outward pressure on pads but not near enough to push the pistons into the calipers, just enough to keep them from rattling.
