Anyone know how get the back brake to work on a 1999 X1 Lightning. I've rebuilt or replaced every thing. It seems like the rubber bushing on the rear bolt of the caliper is to soft. When the back brake is applied the caliper moves instead of the pads. Any ideas. |

The caliper floats if it is moving but the pads are not on the disk, 1. you need to pump the piston back out, to get the pads where they need to go. 2. some part is not in the correct position ( fixed pad, moving pad, piston ) The pads hang on a pin at one end and fit in a notch on the carier at the other, a spring is located in the top of the caliper this helps control the loose motion of the pads, look close you will find it.... disk brakes are simplicity in metal, |

Thanks, I'll check into that and see if it helps. |

I've got a non functioning rear brake on my 99 X1. I had the rear caliper seize while riding late last fall, luckily as I was pulling into a parking lot. Ordered a new piston kit and installed, still no brakes. Was informed that when a caliper seizes it usually isn't the piston, but the master cylinder failing. A rebuild kit and brake line switch can be ordered from Al at American Sport Bike for about $40. That seems to be where my issue is, if you can't identify yours at the caliper/piston you may want to look at the master. Good luck. |
