Getting up and hitting the road early in the morning to drive 5 1/2 hours to save an s1! 1996 s1, yellow, 10.8k miles.. Perfect candidate for my next project! I am buying Beardo's bike that he just listed on Thursday! I've been needing a second s1!!! Story to follow, gotta finish the s2 first... |

12 hours in the truck today, but the bike is home!!! Thanks for the good deal Beardo! I promise to take great care of it!! out of respect for Beardo I wont say what I paid, but he was a true gentleman and remembered right off the bat that we had sort of negotiated a price last summer that due to some life issues we simply couldn't close on, but he remembered the price and honored it within the first email we traded, so I did pay less than the $2K he introduced it in the thread for, thanks for that Beardo!! the bike needs a lot of work to truly polish it out, but I got it at a great price and I have a ton of parts.. and he was happy to see it not parted and saved so I think we both walked away happy on this deal. I checked on the way home and it has 7 open recalls including the swing arm, a HD shop near me still does recall service and they are open on Sunday, so I have an appointment tomorrow at 10:00 to drop it off and get all recalls including the swing arm taken care of. it has marchessini(sp?) wheels on it, but they are trashed.. the silver is mostly peeling off, so Im going to strip the bike down the frame and powder coat the frame and wheels white.. unless someone here has white wheels or PM wheels for sale.. ? I'm going to dig into my parts bins and my "shelf stock" and pull some red body work down, (small tank) and I have a brand new set of 1125 CR handlebars that will be perfect with the small tank (with the part I had made last summer that converts the stock 7/8 cradle to 1 1/8 cradle and still mounts the stock gauge plate it will be PERFECT!)...and I've got a set of Banke stuff sitting in a box..... the S2 is almost done and I do not do well with out a project so the timing is perfect! so the funny part is that even after 12 hours in the truck, I still had to clean the bike!! two trips to the power washer ( I ran out of cleaner) and then finally home to tuck it in the garage for the night... and yes, I've already been rummaging through the parts bins to see what I have to build this bike.... outstanding day, great trip, and rescued another Buell! and the Mrs. even went with me cause she just loves this stuff as much as I do... now.... time for a tall cold one!

got the bike dropped off at the HD shop for the following safety recalls: 1. shock eye (new shock coming if they can get one) 2. swing arm (has the pre-recall one still installed) 3. fuel vent 4. turn signal relay 5. Negative battery cable 6. Side stand switch 7. something else with the fuel tank... don't remember what that one was.. here is a photo picking the bike up...

I am betting the fuel tank retainer was the other thing. Nice John Deere muffler there! |

Yeah, nice john deere muffler indeed. That thing is sweet just the way it is (even the muffler). I'd give it a good bath, clean up the brightwork and not do another damn thing to it...well...probably put the stock hugger back on. That thing is bad-ass just the way it is. |

Thanks!!.. the picture does not do it justice though.. it is clearly a diamond in the rough! It has stock marchessini wheels instead of PM, that are trashed, the powder-coat or paint is flaking so badly that maybe 50% of it is gone, and the front tire wont hold air, I can only assume its because of the flaking at the bead seat on the rim cause they do look straight and no dents or dings.. sooo... both wheels have to be re-powder-coated, and the engine is in cosmetically poor shape from road salt, Ill have to clean that up and probably paint the whole motor. Primary cover wont come clean so its a candidate for black powder-coat like I had to do on my motor for my S2 (which I think looks great!). The frame has spots of rust so I need to take it down to the frame and re powder-coat the frame.. and since I was never a fan of the silver frames I think I do this one and the wheels white. then it gets the obvious list of stuff.. 1. rocker box conversion 2. oil pump drive gear 3. cam cover cut down 4. zippers collapsible push rod tube assemblies 5. new design drive arm support from some guy here on the forum.... 6. it has a S2 style motor mount with the full bracing..didn't know early s1s had that.. or is that a mod from a previous owner? 7. upgraded front exhaust hangar 8. ceramic coat the exhaust 9. some sort of new exhaust muffler... hmmm 10. moto dynamic integrated tail light 11. I'm thinking 1125CR handlebars (since I have a set) / yes they have a 1.25 center but I had a part made that converts the handlebars to 1.25 from 7/8 to run the bigger bars and you can still mount stock gauges 12. probably red body work, I have unmolested perfect body work sitting on a shelf including a tank with no bubbles.... 13. it has the older brakes, brembo on the rear and PM up front(?) should this whole braking system be converted to the "newer Nissin stuff or leave it...the rear is missing the brake actuator rod so I've got to track that down anyway.... any thoughts?? ok group input here on this one... I don't race, track or street or canyons.. too much to lose so I don't even push the S1W to its performance limits so thinking of leaving the motor stock instead of doing a big bore kit, but Im not sure what I would be missing out on and as long as the motor is down, well that's kind of the time to do it... but, Im really leaning towards just leaving the motor stock... any definitive push from the group that could sway me???.... ohhh...it would make it easier to paint the...(note to self: brain...shut the hell up!) so that's the plan.... I have to finish my S2 first... thankfully this bike is currently at HD getting recalls done or I would be in big trouble...it is calling my name!!! must finish current project before starting...must finish current project and clean garage of all spare parts so I don't get things confused before starting...must finish current project...not that I don't want to... but this S2 is really cleaning up nicely and is nearing the point to hit the starter button and set some body work on it and start riding for fine tuning...and the S1 is in such poor shape that I just feel compelled to get started! did I mention its really in rough shape??? But its an S1 that runs!!!! |

What Beardo said, Just ride it. Someday it may need more love and then you can run through it. Unless you just have too much money laying around then go for it.. |

I can't believe the dealer can still do the recalls! That is the best looking bike Buell made, IMHO. That's the one that made me buy a Buell, only I got the M2 and now its yellow too. |

If you want you can put an S-2 rear hugger on, looks real nice! What air cleaner--- and why not leave the stock muffler? |

I got the turn signal issue fixed, broken wire and a broken female spade in the rubber boot where it connects to the relay. easy enough. {thanks again Vince for the time on the phone chasing schematics while I chased things with the volt meter). wasn't going to touch this bike till I did a complete tear down but I just couldn't leave well enough alone.... I replaced the WP forks with a brand new set of Showas, fixed a fuel leak in the petcock, and bought a Drummer exhaust and got that installed today. the guys t Drummer are great to deal with and the exhaust is very well made, has a nice sound to it, not to loud (at least for my taste) and really fits well. it has a removable front J pipe that helps you properly set length and angle of output to connect to header to remove as much stress as possible... these things are very well made!!! extremely happy with the purchase and the service, just cant say enough good things about them! then went scrounging through the parts boxes and found an original carbon fiber rear hugger with the license plate hangar (I didn't have a relocator in the spare parts so no way to hang the plate from under the tail light), anyway, with the new front forks and the fuel leak fixed and the exhaust... I was on a roll so I got the hugger installed and the license plate on, its now street legal... one note bout the forks, its extremely possible that the forks were good, as they were not leaking, they just might have had a lighter viscosity oil than I am used to as they seemed really soft.. not knowing exactly what I had a went head and changed them out, Ill check the WPs I have and maybe put them back, with quite few tubers its always nice to have extra forks ready to go! hmmm... now its a matter of tune it up for the pipe and ride it long enough to ensure properly tuned then tear it down... or ride the hell out of it and make the tear down total frame off restoration a winter project.... well... maybe do a few basics to it first... xb rocker box covers, catch can, the push rod tube bases are leaking, got fix that, small weep but as long as I am doing the rocker boxes... might as well get in there too.... hmmmmm maybe just ride the darn thing! because once the rockers and push rod tubes come out then its time to undercut the cam cover... then its time to... look out for the rabbit hole!! |

.... and while watching all the talk about the 1250 kit, trying to sort what to do if anything with this motor... leave it stock, or build the 1250 kit with head work for just under 2,000.00... decisions decisions..... |
