Hey Guys I was just wondering how many of you guys run your S1, M2 etc without a rear hugger/fender. I really love the look of the bike without it but am worried about dirt, stone chips, wet ass, oil tank damage etc. Have any of you guys ran into problems |

Much more pleasing on the eye without it, I have an ally oil tank and can't fit it anyhow, just needs a little polish now and again.....I dont use it much if the weather is foul however |

I ran without for a year you will get alot of dirt up by the oil fill area. So I put a shortened hugger which helped |

Ditto on the shortened hugger for me.
Most foreign bikes have abbreviated or no rear fender at all except the inner fender under the tail which serves to keep the dirt and H20 out. |

I still have mine. And I went out of my way to get one for my S2 that the PO had removed. I hope it didn't get tossed, they're CF. |

I took mine off. No problems.. Just a bit more cleaning to do around the oil tank.. |

Sounds like I should be able to remove it with no worries then. Im repainting the frame at the moment and was worrying that i might damage it if i remove the hugger. Dont really care about a little more cleaning |

I think it depends on where you ride, what kind of weather, how often. My 1125 with the short original rear fender beats up the undertail and the bottom of the tail light. My X1 with the full hugger survives much better. For perspective I live off a dirt road and put about 10K miles a year on each bike. Many people also run without belt guards and are fine. I've had 2 rocks in the 1125 belt last year alone with all guards in place. What kind of riding do you do? |

This bike will be just for the weekends, so only fair weather and no dirt roads. I will also be running with no belt guards due to the hugger and upper belt guard being one piece. Im actually surprised no company sells a more attractive aftermarket option for the tubers. I know i would probably buy one |

I dislike the wet ass/back from riding in the rain with a short inner fender and the S1 tail. But that's just me, and I'm a lot more of a fair weather rider now than I used to be. |

Has anyone ever sanded and painted their hugger? I have a spare and have been thinking about color matching it to my other parts when I try to paint them this spring |

Jim, they look good color matched. The one on my X1 was done before I got it. Couldn't imagine it any other way now. |

I think the '96 S1 hugger is almost the best feature of the bike, along with all the other best features. Run all the Buells with Erik's rear fenders, save the S2 which has one of Al's. Agricultural American styling. I love it. |

I just slightly modified mine. Shortened the hugger by about 3/4" to get rid of the "lip" and then cut it along the curve of the wheel so the rims are more visible. Also cut the belt guard shorter by about 3" and rounded off all the corners. Sanded it all down and sprayed some black satin on it. It looks a little less aggressive, but it also blends in with the bike better now. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u193/SpartacusMagnus/98%20Buell%20Cyclone/2014-04-17171644.jpg (Message edited by IamSpartacus on April 18, 2014) |
